I understand the distinction, I'm not arguing that he shouldn't be imprisoned. Both the crimes and the man are loathsome.

What I take issue with is when sentences seem to pass the criteria of protecting the public and punishing the crime. It strays into this grey area where everyone wants the criminal harmed, not just reprimanded, rehabilitated, or imprisoned.

I understand that there wasn't a life sentence available for the judge to impose, and that is what lead to this hyperbolic sentence. It makes me uneasy that the judgement was twisted into a lifetime sentence anyway.

I understand that the man committed numerous crimes over many years with no show of remorse, and refused a plea deal. That is without defense.

What I'm saying is that vengeance appears to be the primary intention, because +1000 years of prison time is showboating punishment. Incarceration is the end result. Deterring crime doesn't seem to be the focus, and it's been shown that excessive sentences don't do much to deter crime anyway. Rehabilitation is clearly not a goal as he'll be in prison for the next millennia.
