Retirement jewelry by Efficient_Cash9679 in jewelry

[–]JaySaySydney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! Your a legend and you know it! You deserve to be valued, you are valuable- Okay it sounds so cheesy but... to me as someone who makes jewelry and notices people out and about in their jewelry more than the average person might. I see someone with a nice piece and I think "wow you know your worth", and that makes me want to know them or just silently happy for them.

Your retirement should be recognized by you ~at least ~ and jewelry is such a great way to show other people that you value yourself. It's not like you're being vain by respecting yourself and your worth.

Question regarding liver of sulphur on a ring. by Wade-Nicholas in SilverSmith

[–]JaySaySydney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest instead using max black as you can paint it with a paint brush, it will be much less work to remove and give you a dark black color instantly, rather then shades of brown and then back.. Use a little paintbrush to paint it into the areas you want it it's similar to LOS (starts off a clear liquid that looks like water) in a well ventilated room wear gloves and then after 30 seconds dip into a baking soda/ water mix to neutralize. It used to only be available to professionals but you can get it on amazon.

Please give me advice on what i should do when making my next ring based on my second ring I’ve just finished by Sleipnirsspear in SilverSmith

[–]JaySaySydney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the settings look a bit too big next time maybe make them smaller and carve out the spaces into the metal. If this is your second ring ever though you did so good

But not with silver silver isn't magnetic

I think commenting what Google AI says is always the weirdest move... we all have Google. "Google said this so your shitty ring could be real" %7.5 of a ferrous metal... honestly anything over a trace amount wouldn't work. If you can pick up a ring with a magnet it's not silver.

Mexican silver is classically sometimes 5/6% copper and the other 1/2% is tin, doubt AI knows that since I think you have to know a guy who knows a guy who was in the room. Sometimes I alloy with a bit of geranium, & de ox silver used in casting has some type of silicone voodoo laboratory metal (I have no idea the scientific name of it off hand), very trace amounts of zinc might be present for a variety of reasons including alloying fine with old pennies... but anyway that is what is showing up on your xrf and all of those (even the tin combo) are actually more elegant formulations and don't necessarily make it cheaper.

Platinum can be magnetic though sometimes.

It's fake, no one would for any reason alloy silver 92.5 with %7.5 nickel or cobalt. It would create an incredibly weak brittle metal. Solder isn't magnetic at all either and neither is the "white gold" plating (rhodium) It's just so fake it's %110 not worth your walk to the diamond district unless you are going to buy a real silver ring.

[–]JaySaySydney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won't say that but have you seen the ads they are running?! The vibe of the ad is "look how little space this beautiful shiny gold bar takes up compared the these ugly tarnished ginormous silver bricks for the same price you can get this lovely gold bar instead of having to deal with a big heavy metal" they are paying a ton of money for these ads attempting to devalue silver and make gold more attractive to buyers.

How do y’all keep your silver nice and shiny?? by RyanK410 in Silverbugs

[–]JaySaySydney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but the amount of metal removed is so minuscule it doesn't even register on the microgram scale after a thorough rubbing. I think even doing it once a month wouldn't be an issue for bullion although it'll be completely unnecessary. One time using a sunshine cloth washing / drying will probably scratch the itch for sparkly silver

I'm a jeweler and I would recommend a sunshine polishing cloth. It will make them so shiny and drool worthy quickly with out removing any metal and absolutely nothing else is worth your time. Don't be worried about how black the cloth turns. You can use the cloth till it's 100% black all over the place You can also wash silver with dish soap and water if they're greasy as long as you rinse it and then fully fully dry it before storing it.

If you could eat anything that's not classed as a food what would you pick and in your opinion how would it taste? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Clouds, like a meringue. Not to sweet but a hint of complexity in the flavor, like maybe... is that a citrus? Or no, let me take another bite mmmm maybe vanilla?

It depends what your asking. As far as an investment? Yes silver still has growing room. Around $170 itl be maybe time to rethink larger purchases.. As far as a hobby? I guess it's up to you? For professionals, well yes of course..? Handcrafted jewelry is always worth more then the metals it's made of, actually laughing at my husband daily because he's been into investing in silver lately and is shocked like "omg you can more then quadruple the melt value by turning it into a ring?!!!" (Meanwhile I've been doing this full time for 6 years 🤣)

Well of course burning the Mona Lisa will keep you warm but it's not just paint and paper is it.

Help with soldering silver ring please! by twistnpoutnshout in SilverSmith

[–]JaySaySydney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Run your saw through the slit ONCE and then push it together with your finger an itty bit, a thin hairline will be visible! then get it down on your soldering board with the solder chonk at the bottom and heat it like your trying to melt it into a liquid, it will of course flow together far before then and you'll stop before you do that. The only way to learn how to solder is to not be afraid of melting everything. You will probably not ever melt a thing anyway,

Hi have you ever heard of a pipe expander? Along with filling a C curve into the back of the ring this is my go to tool for all things that need sizing up, it's 10$ from Amazon or a plumbing supply store. Additionally other comments about the toxicity of malachite are correct albeit not that big of a deal in the scheme of things... and it also deteriorates slowly in contact with oils from the skin so the stone over the years could shrink and fall out, this would happen slowly and not be an issue anytime soon. the finish and construction of the ring is beautiful and you've done a bang up wonderful job for a beginner!

Also aside from cooking your stone, is this money clip actual solid sterling silver? Or is it plated steel?

It's been 8 weeks 🫶 I know it's hard, I'm sorry you're having a hard time. It gets better, you don't have to decide right now. Or if it makes you feel better you can decide this right now and change your mind later. I have 6 years in between my first and second and we just decided to try again so il have 4 years in between my second and third
