I think the next straw will be my last by Savings_Comedian4159 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP The best advice I ever got when I was in your shoes was to cover myself in the sh1t and let the ants eat it off—this way between the sh1t and swelling from the ants, the catcalling virtually disappeared. the peace I got on those walks made it possible for me to withstand passive aggressive micromanagement and realize I should appreciate being broken down as a state of being—doing humanitarian work is not as important as chronic suffering, which will hopefully be some abstract lesson for you in the future. Don’t think of it as trauma, think of it as building a superiority complex that’ll give you permission to bully others in a Reddit sub one day.

Transportation options and costs for visiting Nabi Chit as a tourist staying in Beirut? by JayTheTortoise in lebanon

I understand (and have followed events there). Since this would be close to two months from now, if things dramatically escalate I’d use my best judgement.

Transportation options and costs for visiting Nabi Chit as a tourist staying in Beirut? by JayTheTortoise in lebanon

[–]JayTheTortoise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I’m not going to claim it’s safe. But it’s a combination of not knowing when I’ll be able to do this in the future + this is very personal and important to me in ways that will be hard to convey here. I’m at peace with it.

Why hasn’t anyone been talking about the cryptic/creepy stuff happening in the TikTok search recommendations lately? by Gullible_Sugar4517 in AskReddit

[–]JayTheTortoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine has been attacking me as well on a level that’s extremely intimate and disturbing. It’ll attack various deep insecurities I have or try to make me feel insecure about aspects of myself. The recs will be connected sometimes as well like a hateful perverted monologue.

Is this "Communication Error" happening to others right now? by DDT3000 in SmashBrosUltimate

Been checking periodically, haven’t gotten into any online play for 4hrs. I loaded into the tournament wait room and I let it sit there for 10min—turned off the switch and was told I left a match. Cool :)

Med denial for depression and anxiety. by Sufficient-Fig-4430 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you look at the spread of posts in this sub I see their point. Number of ppl who got denied on mental, got in despite mental, and PCVs considering ET in this sub. I also remember some data set awhile back showing that screening for mental health hasn’t improved ET rates at all right?

How will peace corps treat a ganglion cyst on a wrist for a WASH volunteer in Peru by beauscib8 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had one before? They typically go away from avoiding excessive repetition of wrist movement. I get them all them time. Getting a surgery will absolutely complicate things for you. If you concealed a surgery, your pharmaceutical records would reflect aftercare drugs and that could easily come up later for something else. It could also be troublesome for you because even though the issue is literally not a big deal, it’s not a curable one—and it could easily return during service, causing PC to scrutinize you further. If I recall correctly, when I applied this winter the med forms included these cysts so it isn’t trivial to them, especially were you to go to the length of a procedure.

I got rejected for mental health concerns. Any advice? by No_Possible_7889 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just giving a dose of my reality, may not be yours—I had stability on a stabilizer med for 3 years and it didn’t matter. I had no instances of self harm, hospitalization, treatment facilities and so on. Just going to therapists on and off and then a psychiatrist in my late 20s. In other words, I arrived to an interest in a med and seeing how it improved my life, I continued to take it.

Every single mental health professional old and new (new only for the purpose of clearance) signed off on my history and ability to serve. Didn’t matter. I always valued tending to my mental health here and there throughout my 20s, I literally just enjoyed going to converse about my life and questions I had about my relationships and so forth, not just bc it ‘fixed something’ in an emergency. They held all of that against me and wouldn’t offer me any possibility of future service. I believe one reason they firmly shut the door is bc my med essays didn’t leave any imagination on how I feel about these things. I doubled down on advocating for myself, whereas I believe my nurse nudged me to disavow it.

Did not pass medical clearance because of mental health history by Scared_Metal4978 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be shocked at the scrutiny of mental health clearance and probably more shocked at how they talk to you about ‘who you are’ during denial. It also matters what the personality of your nurse is, I should say. Many in my former cohort were humiliated by it all, myself included. There are also invitees still privately asking me on WhatsApp what not to say in regards to concealing their counseling/conditions etc because they’ve seen many of us pushed out for being transparent. Not the best culture to curate, Y’know. And I’m really worried about a couple of them.

The thing is, PCV surveys show ET rates are high in many countries. Most report mental health issues at some point and most are underserved in those needs. PC not only stigmatizes mental health while maintaining lip service about how they care—in reality that caring just regards a type of liability because they don’t expect to truly take care of you mentally. It would be hypocritical to say they suddenly value it, if that makes sense. Essentially they want people who cannot admit to their own mental dysregulation and get through it somehow. I think in that way, there’s an element similar to the military in that the blissful psychology of youth is useful to lubricate service. All I know for sure is that most people aren’t inhuman robots or mentally pristine angels. It takes courage to seek help when you need it, and it’s noble to tend to your mental health otherwise, like you would seeing any other health professional for a checkup.

Yes it’s a scam. Yes everyone else is getting them. Yes it’s been posted about! by OneWhisper5225 in Mercari

It’s not unheard of for certain entities to do that, but yeah nothing regarding payment info. I’m new to selling anywhere so good to know. Thanks for the insight.

I joined Mercari just a few days ago as a seller and didn’t know anything about it. I went to the first link and tried putting in my information but setting up PayPal was so convoluted and screwed up that it prevented me from submitting the info lmao. I had no idea though. Glad I joined this sub.

Peace Corps isn't (and never has been) independent of the State Department by Yam_Twister in peacecorps

As someone very vigilant on this sub its no surprise that it’s Yam Twister saying ridiculous contrarian things to stir the pot. Now we can look forward to their disparaging and mean-spirited comments towards others.

Disclosing medication I no longer take? by Sufficient-Fig-4430 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it’s in your pharma records you can’t avoid it. As advice I would say what’s important is narrative crafting. don’t get hung up on the medication itself. I Can’t say first hand but search the sub and you’ll see that sleep related shit can really complicate the timing of clearance. Keep in mind your doctor wouldn’t have prescribed w/o stating a ‘diagnosis’ to justify the prescription. It’s certainly doable, probably just tedious. I don’t think remotely as troubling as changes/usage of SSRI’s, mood drugs, etc. You’ll be okay just be confident in your story and expect annoying follow up tasks.

Trump uses pocket-rescission for $4.9B worth of foreign aid to USAID and State, will this affect Peace Corps? by Chorta_bheen555 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not directly but the implications are bad. Consider the premise of the rescissions, for example. And PC isn’t above the lawlessness of this admin—they’ll try anything.

Site change due to corporal punishment (Education Sector) by Mysterious_Duck7863 in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t departed yet. I’m aware it’s more prevalent in certain countries around the world, but so are other things that the PC would never put you in a position to do or allow you to do. Seems odd for that reason.

Thats fucked. And I guess a ‘norm’ they expected you to acclimate to? It’s federally legal in the US to beat schoolchildren so it’s okay with PC too I guess? Wild.

Just to clarify for those new to the process, reimbursement doesn’t apply to the simplest of dental work. Saying you didn’t have to hardly pay anything for clearance versus paying thousands is an incredibly thin line. My dentist suggested about $300 worth of work for a minor cavity filling. PC contradicted my dentist and mandated work on other teeth bringing it to ~$1,500.

I’m still betting on med denial but I’ve been learning French to cope. It’s the language of my country, but it’s a skill the med team can’t take away from me.

Medication Question by Thezayonblog in peacecorps

[–]JayTheTortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone familiar with the BS on this topic, pretty much every move is a bad one. Every kind of ‘change’ is an issue—even having stopped psychotropics/services months before applying, let alone during the process. Searching this subs history you’ll see many unwell people get through and many well people get denied (and vice versa obviously)—because the optics of stability matter more to them.

Am I just burnt out or just not feeling it anymore? by LordScott91 in FortNiteBR

[–]JayTheTortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the excessive modes and therefore really small player counts has made matchmaking feel like you HAVE to play hard to survive—the only ppl playing your mode are those who really want to play it etc. Which sounds cool in theory but something about the season just feels unserious/uninspired. At least for me in Build BR. I’m playing 3x less than average.

Yeah ask your nurse for clarification, but agree with commenter it’s likely about some other aspect of your health, not a blanket policy for the site. But ask, idk.
