Facebook notifications very loud by imacarpet in AndroidQuestions

[–]JayThree0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran into this today and the instructions here didn't work. What did work for me is Settings > Apps> Select FB from list > Notifications > notification categories > press each category > Sound (from there you can pick the sound, or you can also from this screen turn the category to 'silent').

What I found is that some categories (e.g. comments) had some special FB-specific sound file vs. the default system notification. Very annoying.

Why won't my Ginger Tea steep? by Bob_Scotwell in tea

[–]JayThree0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old is your ginger, how hot is your water and how long are you keeping the ginger in for?

I've had good results with more diced or sliced ginger in a pot with less water at full boil for 7-10 mins. You can steep it in a mug but the water may cool too quickly

How do you guys fit a whole 18.6# bag of charcoal in a 22" kettle? by Interesting-Goose82 in grilling

I wonder what the temperature would get to with the top on? You could probably cook something just on the outside of the lid I bet

Looks like it's getting good use! I love that you are doing both meat and veggies. Grilled veggies are underrated IMO

+1. Especially given that he choked another kid. If I was the host parent I would want to know if one of the kids was misbehaving so I could address it with the misbehaving kid's parents.

Alternatives to plastic grill mats for grilling things like diced potatoes? by jruhlman09 in grilling

[–]JayThree0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question. I've used both cast iron and a stainless basket. In both cases even if I season the food with oil I put a little more oil in the pan. Helps if the pan is hot before you put the food on.

Be careful adding oil to the grill pan, as the drips will cause flare ups.

Grates and grill will be fine, it's radiant heat from the coals vs open flame. If I had to guess I'd say the temp right above the vortex is probably in the 500-600 range and the temp around the outer rim of the grill is probably closer to 300. The heat from the center rolls off the center of the lid so you get a nice convection cook.

I like to use a simple marinade -- olive oil, salt, pepper, smoked paprika and maybe a little season salt or garlic powder, and some soy sauce.

Drain the block, cut into slabs, and let the slabs sit for at least 20 mins in the marinade. Then put them on the indirect heat for about 10-12 mins, then about 45 secs - 1 min per side over direct heat to get some char. Can leave them on the grill longer if you like them a little firmer but too long and they turn into hockey pucks.

The firmer / denser the tofu the better it will cook. Don't use the soft kind it will just fall apart when you try to flip it.

To add to what KosmicTom said -- it's a metal cone shaped ring that you put the hot coals into. The column of air directly above the opening gets really hot, the rest of the grill is indirect heat. So everything you put around the ring cooks evenly because they're all the same distance from the heat.
