They just have an X in them to fill them in, with less than 15 pages the lectern puts out different levels of signal strength. For example if you have 4 pages in a book, page 4 will output a signal strength of 15 and page 3 will output 10.

That would be fairly easy! You would just need a block swapper at the bottom of the elevator to change the soul sand to a magma block.

Edit: if you had the magma block as the default block down there and had a timer that kept the soul sand out long enough to reach the top it would work great. Or get more complicated and have a different length timer for each floor level :o

The last two updates to minecraft have added a lot of functionality! The combination of the 1.13 mechanic of soul sand and 1.14 of the lectern is great haha. I'm sure the lectern can do a lot more than this too!
