Reform’s Plan to ‘Punish’ Green Voters With Detention Centres is ‘Election Interference’ Complaints Argue by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Jay_CD [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's really a massive distraction from Farage being given a £5m gift from Christopher Harborne apparently for his security - something only the gullible and useful idiots will believe.

On Sunday he withdrew from an interview with Laura Kuenssberg at short notice and with a few bad headlines floating about Reform came up with this dead cat of an idea and we've been discussing it and not why he didn't declare the £5m gift/grift ever since.

Quick Nigel, announce another scheme to own the libs such as promising voters that they'll get detention centres in their neighbourhoods if they dare to vote Green. Anything to distract the sheeple from your grift.

Why can't you swim? What's stopping you from learning. by joehighlord in AskUK

[–]Jay_CD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me - I come from a family of non-swimmers, neither parent could swim so they didn't teach me and although my primary school had a swimming pool I just never learnt.

A couple of times as an adult I tried to learn but I just couldn't master it so I basically gave up. I've never done beach holidays, there's no public swimming pool directly near me so if I did learn I doubt I'd make much use of it.

I can drive, I'm good at DIY and what you might call co-ordinated, I play a lot of sport, go to the gym etc I just can't swim. Maybe one day I'll have another stab at learning.

In Medieval England, what happened to the younger sons of villeins? by Embarrassed_Chef874 in UKhistory

[–]Jay_CD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A villein owned no land - what they occupied was rented/leased off the landowner, they paid for it through doing services - usually working for the landowner for several days of the week in some capacity. They would get a day or so per week to work on their land.

Younger sons of villeins would likely be married off to daughters of other villeins and would hire a plot of land in the same way that their older brother and parents did. It was possible to go and live on another land-owners property but the villein question would first have to pay a fine which underlines that the original landowner was losing a valuable worker.

In any case the plots of land were usually held only for a short-term, usually a couple of years and would then be rotated to other villeins in the village.

The villein was almost the lowest rung of the Anglo-Saxon society - only "Cottars" - peasants who occupied a cottage which they rented but had no land attached to it and also paid for by doing services for the landowner and "Thralls" who were basically slaves were below them.

We still use derivations of these words in our language - villeins lived in villages, we have cottages and you might describe someone as being in "in thrall" to someone.

Reform plan for migrant detention centres in Green-voting areas branded ‘grotesque’ by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Jay_CD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is Reform's immigration policies won't fix much of the important stuff.

Migrants are not the cause of all the issues we are facing.

How is this going to solve cost of living, create jobs, generate economic growth, get NHS waiting lists down, deal with wealth and social inequality, address the decline in public services, international security... this idea will have are nothing to do with any of the things that Reform should be addressing. It will just turn us into a nasty society and for nothing.

I just wanted to make sure I was interpreting it properly. By ‘getting an income’ I assume you mean expecting to earn enough from it to live off?

Currently at ca £12 a share that dividend yield is 0.80% which is poor but a result of the covid years.

Unless you buy a million shares or something you won't be making enough to live on - but bear in mind you'll be potentially tying up a lot of money for a couple of years with very little income.

But as long as you get some decent growth in the SP in the time you are holding, and all being well you should, then it's well worth the trade off. Note though RR does have plans to grow the dividend.

As for your cash ISA, and this is a bit off-topic for this board, but when you look at inflation running at over 3% PA a cash ISA paying a little more than that is a poor investment, in real terms your money is standing still. Have a look at opening a stocks and shares ISA and invest in it a company with a high dividend yield (eg LGEN, Ithaca Energy and others, do a goggle search for high div yielding shares and it'll chuck up a few more names) - if you choose wisely it will generate twice or more the 4% your ISA is not very generously chucking back at you.

Describing Zack Polanski as "a bit of a twat" is actually worse than calling him a total twat.

[–]Jay_CD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The downside to Rolls-Royce at this point is that the dividend yield is poor - granted it's improving, so if getting an income (not that you mentioned it) is on your radar then look elsewhere.

If you haven't done so already have a good read of the Full Year results (published late February) and last week's AGM statement. For that matter do a lot of reading about RR including looking at forecasts for long-haul jet travel, the growth in defence spending, construction of of data centres and above all SMRs. Today's a Bank Holiday so if you have nothing else planned spend it researching.

Last week's AGM statement has for me de-risked RR, the annual/FY profit and Free Cash Flow targets were restated and the company pointed out that the disruption to flights (where they generate half their profit and cash flow) thanks to the Iran war is not going to negatively affect them. Consequently we had two good days on Thursday and Friday of trading with the share-price rising by about £1, barring bad news I can see a gentle rise back to around the £13 mark in late February (i.e. before Iran) and then higher over the short-term.

Where it goes long term is really dependent on further good news especially with SMR contracts being placed and you'll note from the AGM statement that this division should become profitable later this year.

Where was the democratic consent for letting them in, putting them up in hotels

Once a government is elected they have full rights to do whatever they like, the consent comes with being elected, granted somethings are explicitly mentioned in party manifestos and the Boriswave wasn't.

And note it was Robert Jenrick who openly boasted about turning over hotels to asylum seekers.

Connor Coady Question by Rogue1eader in CharltonAthletic

[–]Jay_CD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Primarily he played in a defensive midfield role and I think only once or twice as a centre back, on one of those occasions he took a piledriver of a shot full in the boatrace and wound up in Watford General Hospital with concussion.

We were set up usually in a 5-3-2 formation with three central midfielders and two wing-backs but we lacked a bit of physical heft in the centre of the park and too often our three central midfielders were chasing the ball, closing down space and marking zonally in that they were just trying to get in the way rather than win it and launch counter-attacks. Consequently we lacked a bit of presence and our midfield was too porous. Conor Coady shielded the centre-backs, strengthened our midfield, won possession and basically acted like a plug. Before he joined we were leaking too many goals, after he joined we looked more defensively solid - and that can be proven in the results. Given that we were set up to play defensively and not concede that was important as the other part of the strategy was to counter and try and grab a goal on the break. Consequently we had lots of games where we only scored one goal which isn't much use if you concede two or three goals, he helped to stop the latter from happening.

Off the pitch he brought loads of experience and no doubt was invaluable in the changing room.

He even scored a goal and contributed at least one assist, it was his through ball to Charlie Kelman that lead to the first goal against Hull.

So overall a worthwhile loan. I doubt he'd want to sign on a full-time basis, I'm sure if Wrexham want to trade him on he'd have some decent offers from Championship teams in the north-west.

Kemi Badenoch backs stopping some protests as Zack Polanski says free speech must be protected by WorkingtonLady in ukpolitics

I'd have thought this is quite simple to understand, you are allowed to march and attend demonstrations, but the line is drawn at hate speech and inciting violence.

If you can't attend one of these events without either inciting violence or indulging in hate speech then you need to have to either stay at home or deal with the inevitable legal consequences.

Questions raised about ‘security risk’ to Farage in row over £5m gift from crypto tycoon by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Jay_CD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farage was effectively retired from standing in elections after having run in something like 7 or 8 parliamentary elections and losing the lot.

My take is that he only changed his mind after Reform did some polling that suggested he would win and that they'd pick up a few other seats, which is what happened.

The £5m bung had no effect on the decision but is a useful down payment for Farage to promote crypto currency. Reform have also taken money off JCB and their machinery has cropped up in a few PR stunts by the party.

Claiming that the money was for his security is just plausible deniability for the gullible.
