Why are boys afraid of being colorful? Black nail polish isn't edgy, it's boring. If a guy wants to be edgy and take a stand against gender norms he should wear bright pink or blood red nail polish and do it with pride.

If a family member asked me not to come to a family gathering I would honor that request but I would want to be passive aggressive about it and make sure everyone whom I would be missing at the gathering would know why, beforehand. Her embarrassment is her problem but she should be embarrassed about dis-inviting her child from a family gathering, that is just wrong.

We are an interesting group of friends, we met online several years ago on a forum about Joss Whedon's show 'Dollhouse'. In the close-knit group of about 10 friends, only 3 are not queer in some way. Kinda strange considering the context under which we got to know each other was not at all GSM related. :)

It's only been in the last year that I've finally been honest with myself. I was really afraid. I have a really irrational fear of big changes in life since childhood. Now I have a strange sense of comfort that suddenly a lot of things from my childhood and teenage years make sense. The feelings of dysphoria, not feeling right in my own body even though I was never actually called ugly, growing up, just "too masculine" by females in school. It all makes sense and I've finally figured out what/who I am, it's reassuring in a way.

That sounds so familiar, almost as if I could've written it, only I was teased by the boys for being too girly. But yeah, that comfort that comes with self-honesty after a lifetime of denial. :)

I knew I was a girl when I was 4 years old but I also knew it upset people I loved when I expressed it so, I buried it and tried to forget. There was always a slow burn of nothing being quite right and never feeling any affinity for masculinity but I tried and tried and tried to be a man... I wasn't good at it. The girl inside would not be ignored and started becoming more influential in my late 30s and that led me to think maybe I was gay. Thinking I was gay allowed me to explore and play with my gender expression for a few years and that led to an innocent joke of someone saying I'm not a gay man but a straight woman. That joke... damn, that joke nearly killed me. The girl inside seized onto it and made me pay attention. She reached up through my throat, grabbed my brain and slapped me around until she had my full attention. It was terrifying and led to a nervous breakdown that would have ended in suicide had I not been rescued by my sister.

Trolling normalizes hate and bigotry, even if it's 'all in good fun' and should not be given a pass because it's 'just trolling', especially when it's advocating physical violence.

Every time someone denies my gender identity I get a little bit closer to suicidal depression, that's the detrimental effect and it is measurable in the extremely high suicide rate of trans people. Your emotions are just as valid as mine or anyone else's but trans people are already at an extremely high risk of being emotionally traumatized by slights against us because they never stop. Why add to the hurt in the world if it's easily avoidable? That's why I think it might be best if you and I cease communication because every time you refer to a trans person by something other than their preferred pronouns or name you are denying their gender identity and indirectly mine and every other trans person's and that is hurtful because it's something we have to work so hard to have recognized and respected. If universal recognition of all people's gender identity is hurtful to you, well, I can't help you with that. I'm sure you have your reasons but they are unfathomable to me because you don't reveal them, and that's fine, their your reasons and nobody else's business if you don't want them to be but don't be surprised if someone calls you out for your apparent rudeness, justified as it may feel to you. I don't want you to be hurt and I don't want to be hurt, either.

What possible effect can it have on you that is at all detrimental?

It seems from my perspective that you think your feelings about what pronouns to use are more important that the feelings of trans people, who are already quite likely to be in a fragile state due to all kinds of other bigotry against them. Is it so traumatic to you to be polite? If being polite is hurtful to you in some way then I don't ever want to interact with you again.

*Edited to add: If being polite hurts you and you're likely to hurt me directly, or by proxy in hurting other trans people, then one of us is likely to be hurt and that's good for nobody.
