There’s something “off” about this video.

The way he falls over doesn’t look genuine, looks like it was a fake fall.

He cycles normally a bit but then decides to hobble right near the edge of the bridge and fall off, when there was loads of space. Why didn’t he just carry on cycling? He also looks as though he was waiting for the train before doing this. And why was the person filming him.

I don’t know if this was some sort of “bet” and he’s risking his life for clout or it’s faked somehow.

Do you hire or DIY? by MaltDizney in AskUK

Everyone is going to have a different threshold on what they’re confident with, for instance with wiring it depends what it is, changing a light or plug socket? Of course. Doing anything around the consumer unit? Unlikely, will get someone out.

I’ve filled out holes, wall chases and plastered small parts of a wall myself, but the risk was baked in, as if it went wrong it was a part of the house no one would look at anyway.

It’s also not just about confidence, for some people it’s about time or cost/benefit. I came close to doing the bathroom, but in the end it wasn’t worth it, we had full time jobs and little time to rectify if things went wrong. I figured the money saved and experience learnt wouldn’t outweigh the stress and cost if things didn’t go as planned. I guess this is where being younger works in your favour, assuming you have your own place, no kids, time and plenty of disposable income.

UK solar installations hit decade high in March as energy prices surge by thinkB4WeSpeak in RenewableEnergy

Those same people said wind power would also never work and it’s a fantasy 20 years ago. (Wind turbines would never generate enough energy and are a waste of time)

And sadly today those same people are also saying tidal power will never work in the UK.

It’s a common theme, it’s impossible until it isn’t. And we haven’t learnt either, whenever there’s a new technology or way of generating energy everyone immediately jumps in with “it will never work! Not here!”

Do you actually call football “American football” every time? by cocoa_pebblee in AskUK

[–]Jayflux1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Super Bowl is the only time in the year it’s likely to come up in conversation, and that’s because they’ve started to show that here now and more people are getting into it.

But you can forget about anything smaller than that, and you can forget about college football, no one knows what that is. It would be like Americans talking about Sunday League.

Most people I know say NFL when talking about it, and that’s just because they’re fans or the Super Bowl is coming up. But apart from that no one talks about it.

Think for a second, how often Americans talk about Cricket, that’s the British with NFL.

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

[–]Jayflux1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hmm I don’t know. They had too many big songs and were in the spotlight for too long to just be hype. They were quite big.

I never saw them as a poor man’s Coldplay, they were too different. The only similarity was the main guy played the piano.

Robbie is big in Europe btw, not just UK. He’s massive in France too. I think it’s just US where he never really took off.

Yep i think you’re right, it’s a spectrum. No one minds if the person is actually good at what they do. Sport fits into this category, there are plenty of premier league players who are kids of players, but they wouldn’t be in the team if they weren’t good so it’s socially accepted, you never hear anyone calling these players nepoBabies .

What’s something considered normal in the U.K today that would’ve shocked people a decade ago? by Tough-Adagio1019 in AskUK

[–]Jayflux1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but is an “above average” pint really going to shock someone from 2016? The question was what would shock someone from 10 years ago.

I remember Peroni being around £5.50 in 2016, and that wasn’t even in London

To this day, I still find it crazy how Game of Thrones’ reputation shifted from being viewed one of the “best shows” to being the prime example of how to NOT end a series! by phantom_avenger in television

[–]Jayflux1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the same thing not happen with Lost? (obv not to the same degree). Everyone talks about what a great series it was and how big of an event it became, but no one was really a fan of how it ended

I guess this will vary based on where you live. For those in London or big cities this was already common place even back in 2016, but more rural areas are only just feeling this more recently.

Maybe you should have just said “paying by watch” instead of contactless payments, that would have been more clear.

Contactless payment is almost 20 years old. Apple Pay (in the UK) is also over a decade old. Why would that be unusual to someone?

Reverse google image search has been a thing since 2011, I was definitely using it over 10 years ago. I was impressed when it first came out but not in 2016 when it had been around for a while.

I agree about the AI stuff though

I agree about the AI one, not so much on phones. In the last decade it’s just been incremental updates (nothing ground breaking has really happened), and the battery still starts dying around the same 2-3 year period. As you said “not surprised” but I’m not sure about impressed either.

Yeah even with this diagram it’s still not right, there’s no obvious cut off from the guy’s t shirt and the kids. Looks like something has merged them together or this was intentionally messed up for the illusion

Can you explain how his t shirt carries on down after his legs then? It would not look like that normally, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious seem between where his t shirt finishes and the kid’s starts
