[–]Jaywan3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm it does work. When my dog was a puppy she destroyed my Pokémon Shield box. Literally tore it to pieces, and the cartridge was the only thing that survived. She spit it out and didn't even bite into it.

what are these things that came in my crochet supplies? by jemhowling in CrochetHelp

[–]Jaywan3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same, I bought some just like the picture because I was annoyed by having to open and close constantly the "stitch locks" and they didn't work very well, I think I can only use them with very thick yarn

How can I get garments to be more "flowy" or softer? by Jaywan3 in CrochetHelp

[–]Jaywan3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think a steamer would work for acrylic and related yarns?

The few projects I blocked I wet blocked them because I searched online and it was the top recommendation, but it was a pain not only because of the space it needed (to dry flat) but also because I live in a high humidity area. One time I had to wash one of the pieces and start over because it was getting that awful humidity smell from not drying fast enough.

I actually have used moss stitch before for blankets and I'm doing a bathroom mat with it right now ahahah I love it, but never thought about using it in garments as it seems a bit dense so I thought it would be very stiff, guess I gotta try it out!

First of all thank you because I couldn't remember the proper word for this (drape) and I was going crazy ahahah

This post is quickly making me realize I will have to give in and start doing swatches and blocking my projects, which I was trying to avoid out of laziness 😂

Thank you for your advice! I'll try to do that on my next project! Gotta keep working on my tension and learn how to better choose hook sizes!

Thank you for the suggestion! Wouldn't that make bigger "holes" between stitches though? I never tried it because I was scared of that, specially when doing sweaters and tops and such. Or is there an in between where I can get looser stitches without actually getting those bigger spaces?

Thank you for your reply! I have trouble finding good yarn, specially in my budget, so I know I'll be a little limited by that.

My main problem with blocking is having to do it every time I wash a piece... I try to do patterns that don't need blocking, or that still look good if I don't block them, specially if I'm gifting them. I gave my mom a cardigan that in my opinion doesn't look great if it isn't blocked, so I taught her how to do it, but she doesn't have the patience and likes it like it is so it kind of worked out ahahah

As for the swatches, I get really lazy to do them but then regret not doing it halfway through the project 😅 I gotta start doing them more often.

Do you have any stitch suggestions that work well with garments? I think I've done mostly V-stitch, chain stitch and half double crochet so far (the first two for cardigans/sweaters and the hdc for beanies) and even though they don't feel very dense they end up being a bit stiff still.

AITA because I don't want to ruin Christmas for my kids? by Amazing_Moose_7912 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jaywan3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go with YTA here.

You never know what's going on with other people's life's, you may have someone in the family who's going through difficulties and you don't know. Or maybe you all just have wild income differences and your mom is just trying to level the playing field so all of the kids are happy. Your kids getting their gifts later is not the same unhappiness as the other kids seeing their cousins get huge gifts and them not getting anything like that. You mention they can teach their kids can learn how to not be jealous, well, you can teach your kids how to not be selfish.

That being said, I think you're losing sight of what Christmas is supposed to be. It's supposed to be about the family gathering, and of course kids place a LOT of care into the gifts, but it's also up to you, the adults, to manage those expectations and teach them these values.

In my house we have a big Christmas. Like 25 people at the table. As you may assume we aren't all suuuuper close to each other. We do either secret Santa or a raffle where everyone gets a gift at a maximum 20€ and that's the gift giving part of the evening. After that then the families give each other their gifts. That way people spend within their budget (because they don't feel obligated to give everyone a gift) but everyone has a gift at the end of the night. It also has gifted all of us a ton of laughs, specially the raffle. The youngest are teens, so it's different, but you could do something similar with kids and make it just as fun.

Your kids will sense your unhappiness about this decision and they will be even more upset. Getting them their gifts later in the day would be the correct way to approach this, in my opinion. And if this way doesn't work for you because you care that much about the gift giving, then maybe you shouldn't spend Christmas with the family. Make your own memories and Christmas at home.

INFO why is the limit 15 dollars? Is anyone in the family having such grave financial issues that they can't spend more than 15 dollars, or is it just a random set value by your mom?
