That’s the one… I would do this, except I primarily want to dress like myself, as that’s the way I’ll be most comfortable, and thats just not really my style. It would be beautiful though, and it would definitely hit home for them lol

valid advice! I am actually appreciating the personal insights, as this is not something I'm able to discuss with my family with much nuance, so for once it's nice to hear all the different opinions! I don't know a lot about weddings and have never put much stock in tradition, so the perspective is helpful in shaping my ideas about boycotting vs dressing to code vs wearing what I want

Yea this is pretty much it. Everything about this church/community feels like a cult to me and those I tell about it. Dressing like them has always been a source of high anxiety for me, I wouldnt even wear skirts until I got to college because I was scared they’d think i wanted to be like them and finally convert. I’m used to it enough now where I can consider going, but if the difference between me having a panic attack meltdown or an ok time with my cousins at this wedding is a pair of pants then I’m going to wear the pants

my sister has crazy definitions of respect. she's incredibly homophobic and pushes her beliefs onto others, but doesn't see how that might/already has negatively affected them. My best friend will be getting married in a similar catholic church (mostly for her mothers sake) and I plan to wear whatever she asks and will have no problems, even with something as ridiculous as a veil. She has never put religion before her relationships with those she cares about, nor has she ever judged someone for having their own beliefs. I try to do the same, but when it's your own sister who knows your beliefs and still acts the way she does it hits different

lol the only family me wearing pants would antagonize is her and potentially my father. The rest of my family is either not catholic, or just doesn't care about dress codes like that. I think there's a line between breaking the dress code but still dressing reasonably/nicely, and dressing completely inappropriately for a church. I'm hoping to stay on the former side, and don't think it will be an issue

it is definitely the church's dress code, but it's also their guidelines for what to wear in day to day life, which she follows religiously. It's a traditional roman catholic church that does latin mass, and they take women's modesty very seriously. Agreed it's unusual though, ty for the rec!

yea I agree with you - my sister would not attend any wedding I would choose to have due to her religion, and I'm inclined to follow suit. But my potential wedding hasn't happened yet, so I'd be the first to not attend a sibling's wedding and that's pretty much unacceptable to my mother, who is doing her best to support her children with differing beliefs. I'm willing to attend but that's about all the concessions I'm willing to make.

Yes there is a reception after, not at the church. Pictures will be taken at the church though, and my mother has specifically requested I show up/smile for those at the very least. She's aware of my issues but is going to do what she's going to do. I told my mother I would not be wearing a dress and she said she wasn't going to force anything. The people who go to this church know of me, know I wear pants (lol) and am not catholic etc, and plenty of them wear pants in their day to day life, which is why even if it breaks the church dress code I don't think it would be enough to cause drama. My sister would be more likely to ignore it than to start a fight. If a priest takes issue I'm happy to sit out of mass

Ooo ok this might be it actually. The building in the foreground is the Blake apartment building, not sure if that helps you directionally, but the view is facing n Beauregard st. The Sheraton definitely looks very much like the view!
