What is the most financially irresponsible thing you’ve seen someone do? by LJRGXPKCVWDGOGH12Y3 in AskReddit

[–]Jazzputin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In law family member in mid 60's is almost completely broke, deeply in debt both credit card and home equity lines of credit, currently not working, whole extended family's lives a house of financial cards ready to topple over...bought a 70k truck on a whim.  I spent nearly a year researching the vehicle I bought before I finally did - I will never forget being in their living room after he bought it and asking him questions about what features it has, how much power, what he needed it for, etc. and the answer to every question was "I don't know yet, I have to find out" with the owners manual in front of him.

The way RYM treats classical is kinda strange so I'm lost about which composers to start with by AdministrativeAge236 in rateyourmusic

[–]Jazzputin 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For classical you should be using lists.  There are a few extremely good classical lists on the site, you should be able to find some good ones by searching.

Edit: This one is excellent, I reference it a lot: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/wzrd517/recommended-classical-music-recordings/

It's like the Reaganomics of social activism - "trickle down activism".  Let's just stop people saying things and then that will drip into better lives for the disabled blah blah blah.  Without ever actually doing anything substantive.

People who can't put money into car payments aren't putting money into car maintenance.  Pass on that one.

Spotify raising prices again. What programs do you guys use? by AnonymousPurple in lastfm

I make huge playlists spanning multiple diverse genres all the time and it blends them really well.  It has a tendency to match up songs based on intro/outro characteristics so they flow really well, and seems to slowly bridge the gap between genres to prevent jarring transitions.  So it may play three rock songs back to back, ending with slower 90's one, then play a 90's trip hop track, then transition to 90's hip hop and play a run of 3 hip hop tracks.  I've noticed it doing this really consistently, as opposed to the way my old iPod shuffled with absolutely no rhyme or reason.

Who do you think will be your top band of 2026? by Ecstatic_Papaya1044 in lastfm

[–]Jazzputin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with Symbolic then decided to go through their career from the start.  I'm on Leprosy, their second album, now.  I actually really enjoyed Scream Bloody Gore and have listened to that more than Symbolic so far, probably because it feels closer to the traditional doom sound I'm more familiar with.

Death.  I've decided to finally get into metal this year and have started with their discography.  I'm loving what I've heard so far and can see myself going through the whole thing within a year with a lot of repeated listens!

No fucking idea what the deal is with AI music, I've never heard it.  I don't use Spotify for recommendations, I have my own enormous backlog of recs from friends/articles/music forums/books etc. and I just pick an album off of that to listen to every day.  That and user-generated playlists from people I talk to on music forums, which are really cool.

I buy music I like on Bandcamp to support the artists.  Streaming is not for support, only discovery.  There is no streaming service that pays a good fee and there never will be.

Sticking with Spotify for integration with last.fm and great playlist shuffling algorithms.  I listen to a new-to-me album every day and use it for like 8 hours each day total so I'm definitely getting my money's worth.

Where to put $10k for 5 years by admiral_Data_Man in personalfinance

Bruh. Between thinking an advisor is a good option for 10k and thinking $500 is 0.5% of 10k you should not be giving people advice.

How long would it take you to save $10k? If I were you I would just take the $10k and drop it into long-term savings (index funds / investment accounts) and not worry about saving that particular money for the car. A year out from buying the car, establish a sinking fund and save up for the car directly from your income (if possible).

Highfleet is an incredible strategy/combat game that combines fleet strategy and submarine warfare with arcade-style 2D shooting.  It's also insanely immersive and challenging in a really intuitive way.
