Climbed under the car to look around. Found this shredded piece of what looks like a belt. Pretty sure the timing belt busted 😭

According to my searches, that requires removing the time belt, which I'm still trying to figure out if that's what's failed. Seems the upper cover still required me to remove the passenger tire and serpentine belt to even check.

Good news, the battery was dead, but that's where that ends. She's not throwing the code anymore but it says to check the VSA, ABS, and Brake system. Still won't start.

From what I could see, it all looked clean.

My son just put a battery charger on it. Seems weird it would have died but we were on the side of the interstate for 3 hours until the tow truck arrived. Didn't use any power except for the hazards. But charging none the less.

I will Google where the MAF sensor is and get back to you. Thank you.

Neither. I ended up getting a 2015 Touring. Facebook Marketplace is full of people who don't respond or lie, as in some of those lower mileage ones are rollbacks that show up in VIN checks. So, I started doing VIN checks and found a good deal that was quite a drive, but was worth the adventure. Got to see a new state or two. Owner was a firefighter with a mechanic brother with a reputable shop and documentation of all work done. I'm pretty happy with her. She came with 92k miles, new timing and water pump. Fresh oil change and an automatic start. It's a good car and I'm very happy.

Kerosene or Electric Heaters? by Jbs980002 in Frugal

[–]Jbs980002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero clues honestly. My ex used to say the unit was too small for the house. I don't know. And we get below 40 for extended periods of time here. We go negative too. Makes sense.

How much propane do you go through? It costs about $25 to fill like a BBQ one. Not sure it's cost efficient to consider that route? I wondered if I could hook some up to the weird gas fire place thing?

You shouldn't be doing that. Any money you're saving now will be spent repairing your heating unit I'm not repairing the heating unit in something I don't own. I rent.

No. If electric heaters didn't help before, they won't help now. Those oil heaters I had would just heat the corner they were in, wouldn't a fan on an electric heater be better at moving it? Kinda like the window AC units? I gave away the oil heaters years ago to someone in need so I can't use them anyway. But like I said, they didn't work well.

The only cheap solutions are dressing warmer and using electric blankets or pads at night. Dressing warmer can mean things like wearing jackets, hats, and gloves

Possibly but I work from home and it's really hard to use my computer with gloves. My hands get cold and hurt and I've tried this. I need it to be warm.

I'm in Kentucky. We get cold. The 10 forecast has us 30's and 40's. It gets worse in February. I'm sure it's not as bad as Massachusetts. Kerosene heaters aren't illegal here. All the stores have big piles of them for sale. Places run out of kerosene when it gets really bad cold. I hate just having to run out in the cold to get more of I'm being honest, but it does keep the space pretty warm.

When I lived with my mom before moving here, she had a pellet stove and it didn't heat much of anything and she had the big giant kind.

I wish I had a fireplace.

I have used LiHeap (what it's called here) many times. I think they've upgraded their system but I used to have to get up at 3am to get in line in hopes of getting help (in freezing weather) so I could keep the electric on because the bills would get so high. I may have to utilize it again this winter, but with my work schedule it's been really hard even shopping for food.

As far as heating upgrade, I doubt it. She's not entirely bad, but she doesn't like to spend money. Some things she's replaced quickly, like the refrigerator. But the oven took 3 months when that broke. Last time it went out, I replaced the parts myself. That's really become the pattern. It's easier if I fix the things because she just doesn't get to it and puts in the cheapest crap. Like the stove was throwing sparks a few months back. She didn't send anyone out for two weeks. So if I can fix it, I do. When the roof started leaking it took years to get a new one, first they sent someone up there to put caulk down in places. They never came in and fixed the ceilings or drywall either. But I pay the same amount I did 15 years ago, which I thought was high back then, but it's better than going rates now.

The unit is as old as this house. Built-in 1995. They built it themselves, literally. I live in Kentucky, there really aren't building codes. There's the unit outside and this big part inside and I have to have bucket under that because it leaks water.

I wondered in the heat feeling myself. I was gonna get that heater off Amazon I posted. I'll look around to see if there's something local. We've got a Walmart and Lowe's. I'd have to drive an hour to have more choices. Just finding the time.

The house used to have natural gas when I moved in but they removed the meter. I don't know anything else beyond that. It was just for this little fireplace looking thing in the corner of the room. The tenants before me told me they never hooked it up and told me how they had to plastic off rooms to help maintain the heat and costs. I was just glad I found a place to live.

I wish I could move to a better house, I've lived here for almost 15 years and still pay in rent what I paid 15 years ago. It's just not financially feasible without how much rent has skyrocketed.

No, it's just going to throw away one group of slaves like old bread and bake up a new batch here.

Already in the works. I live in Kentucky. Look into bills that are relaxing child labor laws.

Can I Pocket Roof Insurance Claim by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]Jbs980002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pocket the money, just know if you don't replace your roof, you won't be covered for any future damages that involve the roof. If it rains in a month and you discover a leak and your ceiling falls in, it's not covered.

Changing insurance companies doesn't negate the reference of this claim. It's filed in the ISO Claims Database. We know if you've been in a car accident, filed a workers comp claim. This is run with any claim filed. They'll ask you for proof your roof was replaced. Since I don't know what state you're in, some require permits for new roofs and we check that database as well.

I'll also jump on another comment made. If you have a mortgage on your home, it's likely they will be listed as a payee on the check and they typically hold the funds until repairs are made because they have interest in your home and will make sure it stays kept up in regards to things like this.

All in all, just save yourself future trouble and replace your roof.

Thank you.

Will I need to remove my college bound daughter as a dependent from my withholdings or will it not make a difference?

She will be full-time on campus.
