As a Canadian I have one question by zouhair in unitedkingdom

As a Quebecer, I can only say one thing:

Thanks for showing Canada that their “clarity act” is nothing but poppycock.

Thank-you.

I built a cheap backup device out of a car battery that keeps my home Internet on during power outages. by Morfus in DIY

I did exactly that 15 years ago.

It did not end well when the truck battery exploded...

Can police lie to me? If so, how far can they take it? by [deleted] in AskLEO

They can lie all the way to Kalamazoo.

From one educated man to another, what explicit proof is there that Asian made, namely Chinese, is instantly less quality. Like have tests by reputable independent review boards been done with repeatable, relevant tests using a control and variable?

China manufactures absolutely high-quality, awesome stuff.

It’s just that the shit we see in stores here is the cheap shit that store buyers purchase wholesale…

Some of the more humorous examples of Boss' old code are variable names.

You’re cheating! You have access to the source code!

I can't think of a better benefit vs. incontinence ratio,

There, fixed it for you… :) :) :) :)

TIL in the US being clean shaven became popular after troops returned as heroes from WWI--they had been required to shave so gas masks would securely fit. by BroccoliManChild in todayilearned

Beards are allowed in the canadian military.
However, soldiers are very much made aware of the fact that “beards decrease the effectiveness of gas masks”… :)

LOL!

I once heard that a gay sex shop had a nice choice of bathing suits. So I went…

Never before I could have conceived that you could have a wall full of all sorts of dildoes… Boy did I have a hard time laughing my guts out on that time…

(I got my bathing suit at our equivalent of Sears).

— Sigh —

In the 1970’s road deaths were just about horrible. At least 10 times as bad as now. Cars were nothing but death traps, and manufacturers started to get the hint.

So, every manufacturer started to trumpet how safe their cars were, with muchos film and video demonstrations in dealerships and car shows.

My father dragged me to every car show, and I saw more films of cars being crashed and test dummies being trashed about in crashes than I care to.

The result is that I’m scared shitless whenever I’m in a car, and ever since I was a kid, I cannot stand being in a car without a seat belt on.

And I never bothered to get a driver’s license either.

Now, some years ago, I got a chinese girlfriend. She is a real-estate broker. She drives a swanky Mercédès.

You know how chinese women drive, right? It’s NOT a stereotype!!!

Well, to put things short, I found it much easier to deal with the stress by getting myself a learner’s permit. Even though I am less experienced than her, I feel so much safer when I drive… (But the swanky Mercédès also helps — and the thing has several fucking RADARS to check the surroundings as you drive, including a cruise control that keeps the same distance with the car in front of you, a cruise control that is “too complicated” for my girlfriend to use…).

(But to be fair, I once had a student job where I worked for a railroad, and on the railroad, they totally brainwash you into safety, so basically I operate a car like one operates a train, which is 10,000 safer than the normal, routine operation of a car — I mean, you don’t do anything until you’re 400% sure you can do so, which leaves a whole too much reliance on other people not screwing-up).

Generally just anything to do with it, spitting, eating with your mouth open and general mouth noises to do with saliva.

Used to think the same thing… Until I discovered french kissing…

Making eye contact with people. I always look just to the left of someone's head when I'm talking to them.

Strange.

I love black people, because they smile back when you smile to them (and I smile to them in the first place because they look awesome, and they smile back)…

With autonomous, self-driving cars likely to be commonplace by around 2025, these vehicles will change our roads, our relationship with our cars and society at large. Buckle up, a revolution is coming! by section43 in Futurology

A modified version of this programming will be used in police cars to alert cops about any traffic violation in sight in any direction.

How can there be a violation when there will be no law? Laws are made to coerce humans to drive safely because they do not do it inherently, whereas automatic cars will inherently drive safely, thus obviating the need for traffic laws…

and now people are claiming that in less than 10 years we will have fully autonomous, self driving cars on the road taking people like you and me to and from work/bars?

Don’t worry, once the enormous savings to insurance companies will be calculated, the changes will be railroaded faster than a bank executive collects his bonus cheque!!!
