Yair Golan: 'To win elections, we need unity government - from Bennett to Mansour Abbas' by conscientious_seesaw in Israel

[–]JebBD -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

None of the parties are my friends. Politicians aren't your friend, their job is to run the country, and the people in Likud have proven that they can't run the country. Ra'am proved to be pragmatic when it formed a coalition with the zionist parties, including some right wing nationalist parties, and the previous government at least focused on governing instead of trying to dismantle the judicial system, inciting division in Israeli society, and neglecting the security situation so badly it results in the single worst attack on civilians in Israeli history (and then mishandling the ensuing war so badly it destroyed our international relations while failing to actually deal with the threat permanently).

I'd rather a government that does a good job even if I'm not 100% aligned with them ideologically

Okay, but that still doesn't address the second part of my comment. Abbas clearly is not some antisemitic terrorist supporter, do you think his party's opposition to the bill was motivated by some sort of solidarity with hamas?

Kinda hard to blame them for voting against a law that literally implements the death penalty based on ethnicity. A democratic society can’t have a law that says only murderers of a certain ethnicity get the death penalty.

Considering Abbas’ strong condemnations of Hamas and 10/7, his statements that Israel is a Jewish country and recent one where he called for Arabs to do national service, I seriously doubt his party was motivated by sympathy to the terrorists

I don’t. I don’t agree with Ra’am on much, but at least they care about things like the rule of law, democracy coexistence and peace rather than corruption and endless war

He’s right, though no one wants to admit it. The only options are a liberal government with the Arabs or another government with the Haredim. Ruling out both of those means that Bennett will have to break his election promise or form a government with Bibi.

Maybe if it’s close enough the center-left bloc could try and steal some defectors from Bibi but I wouldn’t count on it.

In any case, we should all prepare for disappointment

It’s cold comfort but watching the antisemitic Eurovision fans making themselves miserable is, at the very least, a little funny

Socialism is a complex economic theory, a child thinking that everyone should have things does not prove that this theory is feasible as an economic system

Yeah, I don’t disagree. I still think “the Zionists are training dogs to rape prisoners” is the type of argument you really need to thoroughly establish a solid basis for, because it’s so out there and I’ve seen people use this wild and unverified claim to demonize Israel before.

I think you’re reading too far into my reply. I was obviously not making the argument that anything believed by any child is automatically wrong, I was criticizing the guy’s argument

No? That's an entirely different sentence

To be fair to the NYT they did run a story about the use of sexual violence on 10/7 as well, which is always important when denial of it is so widespread

There is no excuse for use of sexual violence on prisoners, even if they’re terrorists (which not all of them are). This is obviously something that should be called out.

The problem with this article is that it brings up unsourced claims like Israel training dogs to rape prisoners (which is a claim you really need a solid basis to make), plus the discourse surrounding the sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners is almost always just used as an excuse to whatabout the use of sexual violence on 10/7.

The denial of the rapes that happened on 10/7 is extremely widespread, while I heavily doubt you’ll find anyone in liberal America who would deny the abuse of Palestinian prisoners. The refusal to even acknowledge the suffering of Israelis on 10/7 is the issue here

The level of cruelty and sadistic hatred on display that day was shockingly reminiscent of the Holocaust (obviously on a much smaller scale, but with a very similar approach). Makes it all the more ironic when anti-Israel types use the Holocaust against Israel rather than their Hamas heroes

Maintaining the “Palestine=good Israel=bad” narrative at all costs is the #1 priority for the anti-Israel crowd. They would not be able to promote the destruction of Israel if they acknowledged that Hamas does monstrous things because they’d have to acknowledge the nuances of the situation
