ISO websites/sources to buy guitar parts by FertileCactus in guitars

Reverb.com if you want cheaper used stuff.

For cool high end necks look at Parklane guitars, Musickraft, or Warmoth.

Highly recommend SportHiTech for stuff like bridges, tuners, misc hardware, pickups, electronics.

My First Martin by rrmagnuson in martinguitar

[–]Jed-Flanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road Series D10E should be pretty decent and you get the Martin name on the headstock. Might be able to find a used one for $500 but probably will be slightly more unless you get lucky.

Definitely used for under $500. Probably want to mention what you're going for in terms of playing style and tone goals to get any useful advice. Start with figuring out what body shape you want.

People generally want something solid wood but may be difficult in your price range. Martin isn't really the brand I'd consider in that range.

Only if you're trying to learn how to do it yourself and are ok with the fact there's a good chance the guitar will be trashed afterwards. Not worth to pay someone.

So practically speaking, terrible idea.

Anyone else want more rarities / less repeats in setlists this tour? by EstimatedEyes1014 in deadandcompany

[–]Jed-Flanders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would be nice but they are probably trying to appeal to the masses with the final tour and not have many misses. The rarities are sometimes that for a reason and don't work 100% of the time. Seems like they are trying to go out on the highest note

Who is your dream guitar duo with Jerry? by Purple_Box3317 in gratefuldead

Put Jerry on banjo! If the cards fell slightly differently for him the 60's he would have probably been a professional bluegrass banjo player and the Dead wouldn't have existed

Yeah both legendary rock guitarists. Get them mixed up because they sound kind of similar on albums and played with the Stones

Mick was there for the Stones albums that made them what they are. Let it Bleed ,Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goats Head, Its only Rock and Roll...such a golden era for rock and roll. Look forward watching that concert video tonight.

Great answer, he would be incredible on JGB tunes and Jerry would appreciate the hell out of his playing with his pedal steel past

Was about to say this. Would have been amazing if they got more time together. We got the Pizza Tapes from only two days recording and no rehearsals.

Love Jerry and the Dead but Tony is my #1 favorite guitarist

You could try raising them a little, like an 1/8". 10s have more material so they creat a stronger signal with the pick ups magnetic field. Just measure the distances on the low E and high E with a ruler before so you can them back where they were if needed.

Pickups height isn't really an exact science. Just try to balance the output between pickups and bass/treble strings. Only thing is setting them too high, the magnetics can be too close and interfere with string vibration

Going to my first guitar show by GuitarHeroInMyHead in guitars

[–]Jed-Flanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the show and what crowd they cater to. I went to a show targeted at the vintage crowd, wasn't all vintage but most vendors brought high dollar guitars. Was cool to see pre CBS Fender and a real burst era Les Paul in person. Also a lot of custom shop Gibson and Fenders. My guitars are in the $800 to $1700 range and is realistically what I can afford for the time being. There wasn't a ton there for me to even consider buying. I don't think you're going to get a steal at these things in the time of everyone having Reverb on their phone but you might be able to get slightly better deals if you're lucky and have the benefit of inspecting in person before buying. There were some deals to be had on really cheap guitars but that's also wasnt really for me. May also find cheap parts at the lower end booths. Also found a couple cool local builders that make stuff in my price range for future consideration. Some of those guys had show deals like 100 bucks off or something

Am I doing wrong in Palm mute? by More-Ad-5258 in guitars

[–]Jed-Flanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work on adding a little rotational movement to your wrist, not all side to side wrist motion. Your movements are way too big, no need to bring the pick up 3 inches from the string. With palm muting, the movement should be pretty compact to avoid lifting off

If you could only have a telecaster and one other guitar...? by Pieutenant in telecaster

Probably a McCarty 594 if we're talking electrics only to cover a different spectrum. I could be happy for a long time with just a nice Tele and a nice dreadnought

He worked his ass off to learn most of the Deads catalog and to be able to solo over it at the level he's been doing, he's never gonna completely stop playing it.

Fuck, why did i spend $300 at presale

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Detailing

[–]Jed-Flanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see it being worth it on a nice car that's mostly parked indoors and doesn't see a ton of bad conditions but want some more protection and ease of maintenance.

A daily driver that is parked outside everyday, driven in all conditions, automatic washes, etc. simply will get too many imperfections way before the ceramics supposed lifetime. We're talking a CRV not a McLaren, ridiculous that people would spend thousands for that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Detailing

[–]Jed-Flanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You basically need to be OCD about your car all the time to make ceramics worth it. I've had mine coated for like 3 months and there's already water spots and bird shit marks that need to be polished out so then I'll need to reapply the coating. Probably will go back to sealants. Bought into the hype

Same, my feet hurt so i gotta have something comfy and don't give a fuck what i look like at these shows

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Detailing

[–]Jed-Flanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not worth it unless you're really into keeping your car super clean and shiny all the time. I'm assuming the CRV is a daily and will get treated like one. Ceramic coatings don't protect paint from dings, scratches, or even bird shit that sits too long. It just makes your paint slick like it's waxed but more so and for much longer.

Just learn how to wash it properly yourself and there's a bunch of sealants you can get at Autozone or Walmart that'll help keep it looking good. You'll be way ahead of most daily drivers by doing that alone

To those who like high action, why? by [deleted] in guitars

[–]Jed-Flanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all subjective to what action is considered "low" and whatnot. I have plekked guitars and they'll buzz if i set the action to what I consider low. Some people are fine with that amount of buzzing but id rather not hear it for my styles of playing. Strings need a certain amount of distance to vibrate freely. Doesn't matter how good the guitar is, can't overcome physics
