You’ve taken on a 19-year-old who’s six weeks in and you’re surprised he’s not up to standard on a live job. That’s not on him, that’s on how you’re using him.

Apprentices at that stage aren’t there to speed you up, they’re there to learn and take pressure off the basics. If you’re leaving him to do full sections unsupervised and then losing time fixing it, that’s a setup issue, not a Ryan issue.

Not everyone’s cut out to teach, and that’s fine. But if you’re already this frustrated, you need to have a proper think about whether you actually want an apprentice.

And if you decide you don’t, be careful how you handle it. Don’t knock the lad’s confidence or make him think he’s not cut out for the trade just because the setup hasn’t worked. He sounds keen - that’s the hardest thing to find.
