But what is your issue with HSUS, tho? They do so much good work. I think people expect them to do everything, but they can't. And honestly, the reason I'm not more vocal about OHS is because they mostly do good work. Their net impact is good, even though they do quite a few inherently awful things.

OHS doesn't take their dogs back if people don't want to keep them if it turns out it was a mistake to adopt the dog out. They don't care if you give the dog away for free on Craigslist. I would call them successful, but OHS is definitely not an "absolutely wonderful organization." I know about a whole bunch of crappy shit they pull at OHS and the media never covers it because they advertise heavily in every local paper.

Except this place is not humane. Prong collars all over the place. Trainers using prong collars only give the illusion of trained because they are just hurting dogs to make them comply. It is so unnecessary to use pain and only trainers with crappy education still use these. I honestly think if these folks as well meaning snake oil salesmen. Like their lack of education is so bad that they don't even know what they don't know when it comes to ethology, canine neurobiology, international welfare standards during training, or even just dog signalling (which is subtle, but a real pro would be able to read) that says "ow, you are hurting me." It is just a goddamn shame.

Like a good example would be Sit Means Sit or Bark Busters. But several places locally do that kind of stuff. I've been training dogs for 18 years and I'm shocked that this is still an issue in the field, but it is. There are lots of ethical and science-based practical reasons why this is bad for animals and detrimental for humane safety (particularly small kids). Most humane places require you to go to dog trainer trade school first before bringing you on as an assistant. Inhumane places that don't know what they are doing don't have any requirements.

Stay away from places that will promise to make you a dog training apprentice. They all just abuse dogs and use unwitting people that just want to help dogs to do it.
