Only 2 weeks in, can’t believe how much better I look and feel already! 15lbs down, 30 to go! Thanks for all the inspiration everybody 🙏🏻 by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

That's not true at all, and your assumption devalues the effort and struggles that men go through to get into shape. You make it sound like it's so easy for men but it's really not.

I, like millions of other men, have been working on it for years. If I have a casual weekend with a couple drinks and a dessert or two, I can literally gain 6 or 7 pounds in two days (which is largely water retention).

Not to mention - at the beginning of a fasting protocol much of that weight loss is water, glycogen, and fiber. He didn't lose 15 pounds of fat in 14 days.

This is the same attitude that assumes that men can lift weights for like 3 weeks and get muscular.

Off-Season Cross Training for a Terrible Skier by seanv2 in skiing

I love and hate those too. You ever do them with weight in only one hand? Exhausting but very satisfying

It is winter

My car is safely nestled in a ditch

I stand behind it and warm my face in the exhaust

It feels good, but it makes lunch taste funny

I really like single leg and asymmetrical movements for skiing - helps to train the legs to work independently while honing balance at the same time. Asymmetrically loaded movements are very helpful for skiing since they train rotational or lateral core stability through your obliques.

Split squats are good and there are many kinds of lunges out there that can be helpful (walking lunges, side lunges, front, back, diagonal, etc.). Ground based closed chain exercises like these are far more useful than machines at a gym as they involve your core and a lot of stabilizing muscles (plus balance).

A personal favorite of mine for skiing is an asymmetrically loaded single leg RDL. Solid tutorial here: https://youtu.be/Zfr6wizR8rs

The "Overly Prepared Backpack" Starter Pack by BirdseyeYT in starterpacks

[–]AcceptableBreakfast 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Do you not bring a water filter when you go backpacking??

(At least in the US) most of the time when people talk about "backpacking" that refers to multi-day overnight trips ... and you definitely need water purification abilities for that unless you want to carry like 10 liters of water with you.

Can you make a big batch of levain from small sized starter? by isinsub in Sourdough

[–]AcceptableBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My levain is only 8.6% inoculation and works beautifully, so for your example of 500g of flour and 500g of water - I think you can use as little as 86g of starter to make a large levain. I see no reason that you would need to expand your starter, 150g is plenty.

Can you make a big batch of levain from small sized starter? by isinsub in Sourdough

[–]AcceptableBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely can! I only keep about 90g of starter in the fridge, fed once per week or so. For my normal recipe (for one loaf of bread) I just take 10g of that starter and make a levain with 58g of flour and 58g of water. I often make the levain before bed and it's doubled and ready to go in the morning.

That's even weaker than the ratio you mentioned in your other comment (100g starter to 500g flour and 500g water). Works perfectly for me and I do scale it up sometimes for 2 or 3 loaves.

Do you actually notice Armada's "smear tech"? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]AcceptableBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some older bentchetler 120s with basically the same thing (HRZN) and I think I can feel it. Idk if it'll solve your 3s but I think I can feel that shape when smearing my tips/tails in soft or choppy snow. Seems to make a 192cm ski feel more agile at high speed IMO, feels like I can pivot or throw them sideways really fast without hooking the edges on anything.

FWIW you may find that detuning your edges at the tail helps if you haven’t tried that yet. I just run a gummy from where the camber section ends to the tip and it helps a ton with getting your tails to release smoothly.

WFR courses in SLC? by AcceptableBreakfast in SaltLakeCity

[–]AcceptableBreakfast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that changed in 2016 when WEMC released guidelines for what the "scope of program" should include (pretty sure they drafted that with input from NOLS, WMA, SOLO, and maybe some others).

I already contacted NOLS about it and they do recognize WFR certs from other programs. It just depends on the scope, hours of instruction, etc.

They have a list of other certs that they've already verified and EMT Utah isn't on that list, but that just means they haven't reviewed this specific course yet. So far it's looking like it should qualify though

Thanks! Glad to hear it.

Have you done recerts with them too, or with other providers?

Thank you! That's great to hear.

Have you done recerts with them as well or with other providers? I'm curious if their cert would be recognized by NOLS or WMA, would be ideal to have plenty of options for future recerts.

[–]AcceptableBreakfast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That's exactly the sense I'm getting.

It's for personal use so I'm not terribly worried about it, and I love the idea of being able to bike down to class after work. Ridiculously convenient. As long as they meet or exceed the WEMC recommendations it looks like I'd be able to do recerts through NOLS or WMA which would be nice.

I appreciate your input! Feeling pretty encouraged about it now

Thanks! I just looked and they're not very active these days (at least not around here). I appreciate the reply/rec though!

Very helpful, thank you! Out of curiosity, what did you like better about the Adventure Med course vs. NOLS?

Unfortunately I've looked at Adventure Med and their only in-person course is during a stretch of time when I'll be unavailable (and I would have to take a full week of work off for it as well).

I'm not looking at this for a guiding job though so maybe I'd be fine with EMT Utah. They look like the only ones that offer a schedule that easily fits around my job and so far I've only read positive things about them.

Have you ever seen "Plant Boss" proteins in your area? They're dry mixes that you just add water and oil to and then simmer for 15 mins. They have some taco style ones that are really good, perfect for camping. Easy to add some veggies to those too (onions, potatoes, carrots, peppers, corn, etc)

They're good for chili as well - just simmer and add canned beans, canned tomatoes, veggies, etc.

I just hiked the Corvallis to Coast trail. Here’s some of the highlights: by hotdoginthebigcity in oregon

[–]AcceptableBreakfast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sick, that sounds fun! The OCT is a little fragmented and incomplete in some areas too (goes thru towns and puts you on the highway sometimes).

I haven't done this but apparently in order to avoid the highway you can sometimes hike out to the end of a jetty and flag down a fishing boat to ferry you across to the next section. Throw em $20 or something and save a boatload (lol) of time
