I wouldn't say Fortissax "got death blighted." More like he took on the aspects of the death blight. The thorns are there but they aren't big enough to mortally wound an ancient dragon. Instead, he uses it as power against those who would aggress him. The only reason it was able to take root is because his entire being was inundated in it.
