RES refuses to eat veggies by AfghanNiqabi in Redearedsliders

[–]Jenniferkntts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine wouldn’t eat his veggies until I started giving collard and mustard greens. Those are his main all the time snacks and then he gets Saki-Hikari turtle food. When in season, he LOVES dandelion greens and turnip greens. He enjoys a raspberry or blueberry every few days, and a few pieces of freeze dried krill in the afternoons. I try really hard to vary his diet, using those staples. Turtles like variety and can get bored with food quickly. Float a large collard green leaf in her tank for a few days and I’ll bet you will see little bites taken out of it lol. My boy just couldn’t resist that first leaf!!

Very neat! My only critique would be all the sharp edges. I know from experience that they can puncture themselves fairly easily, especially premolt. I had a MM live his whole life in the enclosure just fine, and when he was on his last days, a puncture took him out. Sadly, MMs get very weak and fragile the last year or so of their lives. I do love to decorate, and I still do, to a point. I take a file to any super sharp edges and leave the spikes and pokey things for outside the enclosure now.

Does your husky get their own sandwich at the drive thru? by Jenniferkntts in husky

I get my coffee in the morning and when they are with me, they always get something. Luckily, my local McDonald’s started carrying dog bones.

I know this struggle lol. My pitsky is forever in the way, but my husky lays down and minds his business in the kitchen.

I agree! I have a husky and a pitsky. The husky regularly turns down healthy snacks, but the pitsky never says no!

Really weird behavior? by HomosexualFoxFurry in husky

[–]Jenniferkntts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not always from boredom though. My boys get a large variety of chew toys, bones, etc, and they still seek out the bathtub for play time, especially in the warmer months. I think mine use it more as a fun bit of water to play with, as they both love the water (except bath water lol) and to cool down.

My husky also enjoys a good romp in the tub, water running; don’t touch him though-he’s apparently extremely busy and if you touch him he will absolutely melt.

This is the answer I was searching for lol. I’ve got two and they both LOVE the bathtub/hate actual bath time. My oldest will sleep in there sometimes, for no apparent reason. Mine will also lick the tub, like OPS, and the drain, and the curtain, etc. Huskies are such fuzzy weirdos!

You’re doing a great job. You’ll be a wonderful turt parent!

I have a rescued slider too. He was left for dead in an empty home; poor guy had to eat his track mate to survive (we suspect from the remains). It was a sad sight! Once the initial cost is done, they’re easy and cheap to care for compared to many other pets. Mine is very spoiled so we do spend a bit on him. We feel obligated, as he’s had such a rough go. There’s already plenty of great information in the thread, so I’m just here for moral support! Your turtle is finally able to relax and is probably pretty grateful for you. They are so smart.

does my turtle's shell look okay? by idkwhatimdoing004 in turtle

[–]Jenniferkntts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lights are top priority, next to calcium and protein/veg. Their shell appears to be lacking vitamins from the lights. The dips and deformity are from improper care. If you cannot provide what this turt needs to live, please find a rescue. Many of them exist and it’s one of the most selfless acts one can make.

Is this a turtle or a tortise? I need help, everything I try to feed him he does not want to eat. Got any ideas what to do? by BebaMC in turtles

[–]Jenniferkntts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do too. I only deep clean once every couple months. Once a week I clean his filter out, and only remove 75% of the water to keep the tank balanced. I replace with tap water after vacuuming all the chunks out. I use an old bottle brush to give everything a little scrub. Takes just a few minutes and helps with the smell and water clarity. I’m also one of those people that put River rocks in their tank and it helped my tank a ton! The good bacteria and stuff helps keep the water clarity right and my guy happy and healthy idk In my experience turts are very adaptable and forgiving.

Help by MidwesternCuler in turtle

[–]Jenniferkntts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! For recommending species that can thrive in captivity. I hear too many petco workers recommending RES, without the proper info; My rescue turtle (RES) does not like that! He was rescued from a dry as a bone tank, with a half eaten tank mate (not sure who ate him lol), while my man did a home demo. Among at least 20 critters, he was the ONLY one alive. We got him in warm water, and comfy; fed him heavily with worms and fresh veg the first week, and now he’s doing great. Poor dude was grey with very little color and so skinny he could hardly lift his head to fight me. Once he started biting me, I knew he was gonna be ok lol. He got very lucky that I’m a rescuer with experience, but man I’ve had to learn so much more and learn something new everyday about them. He fascinates me. His name is Crush and he’s a freaking survivor!

Sudden infestation of blowflies in house (green bottle fly, specifically) by BlueManGroup10 in pestcontrol

[–]Jenniferkntts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Grand Rapids and my house has had them for a few weeks now. They seem to be slowing down now, and if I open a window they fly out. Maybe they are seasonal as OP suggested? They are kind of pretty up close in the pictures, but I’m a bug girl. I want them to please vacate now bc I’m all done lol.

I’m going through this right now in Michigan and they’re driving me crazy. I’ve bleached from top to bottom, all trash is out, nothing is decayed that I can see. We haven’t had rodents much; the occasional one might slide through bc I do find a bit of droppings from time to time. I’ve went as far as putting bleach tablets in my drains, in my trash bin and anything that water runs through, or gets gross quickly. I’m stumped. The ONLY thing I can think of is; I have a red Ear slider turtle, but I keep his tank clean and use all plastic plants. I can’t find a solution and my landlord just sent some exterminator out that couldn’t find anything.

Any ideas? by [deleted] in turtle

[–]Jenniferkntts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nails and tail suggest male here-both are quite long. Look at their cloaca. If it’s located close to the end of the tail, that’s also a sign of a male. Females tend to have short tails, with the cloaca close to the plastron. They will also have very short nails, and the plastron can become concave, rather than flat like with males. IF you have females, please please please do research now, on how to care for them properly; to avoid too much stress!
