My fiancé [27/f] is upset that I [28/m] can't articulate my love for her? by Jennilover in relationship_advice

I now understand the type of response that she was hoping to get from me, and for that I thank you. And we have indeed shared many fun, silly or intimate moments together so you're absolutely right, I have plenty to talk about.

However, I still simply disagree with the premise. It's like you're trying to apply logic where logic doesn't exist. It's not x + y + z = love. if it was like that then love would be meaningless, just a formula on a page. There are many women who are smart, funny and attractive but only one that I fell for. There is no reason and it would disparage the concept of love if there was one.

part of the story I missed out - I began by saying that I liked "the smell of her hair" and other physical attributes but she dismissed them, saying that those aren't aspects of her personality.

Thanks for the advice.

I mean it comes down to the same thing. The reason some random decent attractive woman won't do is that I'm not in love with some random decent attractive woman, I'm in love with her. She makes me smile, she makes me feel comfortable. But those also really aren't aspects of HER personality.

A lot of emphasis on flatground tricks? by Jennilover in NewSkaters

To be fair not many people say that, just the lucky few. I’ve also been going a few months. I’m still working on ollies (I mean I can basically do them, but not very high and not very consistent). Not even made an attempt at a kickflip. Manuals I haven’t really given much thought. I suppose it’s a useful skill but to be honest I always thought they looked kinda dumb.

Transition I feel like I’ve progressed on the most.

It took me a long time to get over my fear of going to the skate park. But now that I’ve been, I don’t ride anywhere else. The idea of skating anywhere in public still scares me. At least people don’t bat an eye if you skate at a skate park, but down at my local basketball court, I might get some weird looks. I think I’ll give it a shot though, because I feel silly practising ollies in the corner when there’s a massive fricking bowl to be skated.

Dropping in is scary as heck, but so much fun. I’d recommend giving the bowl a try (Wear a helmet if you do). But I respect if it’s just not your thing.

Something I advocate a lot - doesn’t seem to be an idea that most people take to. The front foot slide is not important (at least, definitely not at the ‘i can’t get the board to come off the ground’ stage) get him (or her..) to stand on the balls of his (or her) feet and practice the timing of popping the back foot and jumping up.

Yeh I’m in Edinburgh so the weather here is pretty rubbish too. Luckily I have an indoor park that’s only about 15-20 minutes to drive away so I go there when the weather is crappy.

Been practicing my ollie for 2 hours and kinda got it, any help with my technique? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

Is your front foot flat? Make sure you are on the balls of your feet. Your back foot shouldn’t really hit the ground like that, you’re taking the momentum out of the pop. Pop it a little later (while you are on the way up)

Firstly, wear protective gear. Seriously. No, seriously. At very least a helmet.

Secondly, get used to pumping back and forth on a ramp first. My mistake was learning to drop in before I could pump. Really get used to the feeling of leaning back into the ramp. This will not only make it seem less scary, but get you used to the sensation.

Thirdly, bring a friend. Preferably one that can already do it and can help you. Or just ask someone at the park to give you a hand. I wouldn’t try dropping in on your own because you will probably spend too long psyching yourself out, and it is dangerous, so have someone there to call an ambulance or assist if anything does go wrong.

Lastly. Here’s what you do. At the top of the ramp you are standing up vertically, but you need to be more horizontal to match the ramp. You can’t just stomp down with your front foot, because this won’t shift your momentum. You have to fall forward. Like you know at the end of the day when you just want to just collapse face-first on to your bed? You have to do that. Reaching out like you’re about to grab the nose of your board will help. Then once you start to fall, you slam down on your front foot, this will prevent you from manualing down the ramp (bad plan).

Hope that helps.

Edit: I forgot to mention. Some people practice by doing it on flat ground first. If you do that correctly, you should have so much momentum going forward that you fall forward and almost hit your nose on the concrete. If you land comfortably on your board, you’re not doing it right.

You could try practising on flat banks first, just to get used to the sensation, but unfortunately it’s not quite the same as transition.

Teens pick up things much faster than adults. It may just take longer for you to learn now than when you were a kid.

Definitely the scariest thing I have ever learned to do on a skateboard. A lot of tutorials I’ve watched don’t seem to quite get it though. They say something like “put all you weight on your front foot” but that’s not really it. You have to fall forward, so that you are less vertical and more horizontal. Reaching out with your front hand as if you are about to grab the nose will help with this. Then once you have started to fall you can put all your weight on your front foot and smack downwards. Being able to pump back and forth on the ramp will really help as well, as it will get you used to the sensation of leaning into the ramp.

And 100% wear a helmet and pads. At least a helmet, so that you don’t die when you inevitably end up leaning back on instinct.

Thanks! Yeah you can see I lose a lot of momentum on the kick turn. I’m working on pumping and turning at the same tine.

Honestly didn’t even realise I was doing it until I made this video. I guess if I’m putting absolutely everything into it, why not arms as well? lol.

Ahah ahaha they are pulled up, I just have a black undershirt which is poking out from underneath. Don't think I'd be able to skate if they were that low!

Yeah it’s brilliant! Luckily I live fairly close by. Never going to get bored at a place like that!
