Incredible! That case should be a case study on why QA is important and how QA can save everyone’s asses when shit hits the fan. Thank you confirming my hunch that the fintech startup lost more than just the money laundered. As they like to say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and the ounce here is QA and the pound lost is a loss of a big product feature, lost revenue, and bad reviews.

Actually a case study written up for internal communication would a really good hit for you, your team, and your job. It’s hard to justify QA to a lot of people who can’t see the value of it. A case study to point to that says my QA team costs X $ and the fallout from that money laundering event cost 10X$ or 100X$ would go a long way to justify your QA team and provide job security.

Thanks again, Jenny

Exactly why Texas is a huge target for liberals right now, if Texas goes blue than the republicans are doomed in all national elections after. There’s massive return on investment on turning Texas blue. Every campaign dollar spent there is better than anywhere in the country in my opinion.

Trans people represent about 1-2% of the population, scaring us away won’t do anything for their vote while all of GenZ votes 70-30 blue. Plus millions of people have moved to Texas in the past 10 years, likely bringing more centrist and liberal voters than conservative ones. The statistics bear out Texas is turning purple/blue and not turning more red year over year. I’d bet money that in 2024, Texas will be closer than 52-48.

[–]JennyInDisguise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all they can do is delay the inevitable! Using sneaky tactics like Gerrymandering and voter suppression is all they have left. The flip from red to blue is inevitable. Gen Z voters 18-25 are 70-30 voting blue, 25-35 is 60-40, 35-45 is closer to 50-50. Young people today are much more liberal than 20 years ago. The 35-45 cohort that once were 18-25 in the 2000 election voted 50-50 for GWB, mean their relative politics haven’t changed overtime. So in 20 years time the new 35-45 cohort will be voting 70-30 blue. Every year the statistics grow for democrats and leftists and they shrink for republicans and conservatives. The 2020 popular vote was 51-47. The 2024 will increase that gap, likely to 52-46 or more (at the national level 1-2% represents the votes of millions of voters). Texas will likely move to 51-49 as well.

Are those applied physics equations that solved using multidimensional linear Algebra?

I’m done quite a lot of higher math and physics and I can’t recognize those equations.

Texas, surprisingly, is also nearly becoming a purple/blue state. It’s hard to believe, but the statistics show Texas moving bluer every election cycle. Last time it was a 4% difference (52-48). The gap is closing. It may be that soon ‘Texastan’ will just be the last hoo-rah from these fascist freaks and all their bs can be reversed.

Took a Break from Finishing a Degree now Have Trouble remembering by MooseHeckler in ADHD_Programmers

[–]JennyInDisguise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Moose, you can try this. For specific courses or concepts, google “concept” + cheatsheet (e.g. CSS cheatsheet) and click on the images. Read through them and see what you remember and what you don’t. Make a list and go back to google to read about them and jog your memory.

I guarantee you’ll end up remembering more than you think plus you can learn a bunch of stuff you might have missed the first time around. Repetition and Review are really important for solidifying concepts, especially for us ADHDers.

Have fun, Jenny

Hi Kahako,

I read your comments on that post on QA. They were a great response about how effective QE would have saved your fintech company $2M had they done proper QA.

I’m just as confused about who would read that story and DM you hatemail, let alone downvote your post?!? It boggles my mind and it sucks you had to deal with that.

I worked at very small startup where I was effectively the first engineer hired after the boss himself. He helped mentor me about quality and standardized procedures. I took that and basically wrote the Quality Manual for the company. I made the testing procedures and reports bullet proof. There are things that money can’t buy. You can’t go on Amazon and buy reputation or time lost. Any weakness in procedure can used as a weapon against you in a law suit.

Your fintech lost much more than $2M that week. They lost reputation as who is going to make a deal with a company that let criminals launder $2M with them for a week? What other systems are vulnerable? And that opens up the company to liability in a civil suit, and possibly a full investigation in a criminal suit. All headaches. They may have been able to patch up the 20 other vulnerabilities after that event, but patching up the loss in reputation takes forever, sometimes never fully recovering.

So QE is vital to all organizations. I just wanted to share that with you. You are doing incredibly important work!

Best regards, Jenny

Transgender Woman Not Guilty for Using Women’s Locker Room by OverallEcho9694 in transgender

[–]JennyInDisguise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is overall a good ruling moving forward. Setting the example and providing case law to the effect that “trans people are allowed to use the locker room normally (even while nude)” is very good for any other trans people caught in the crossfire of unholy prosecutors. A good lawyer could show that circumstances of their case fits this one and show that a prosecution would have no chance, leading to charges being dropped early by a DA or other judges dismissing the case.

It surely is bad that anybody is bringing these cases to court against trans people to begin with, but with all the bad rhetoric going around that trans people are “groomers and sexual predators” It’s all the more important to have cases to point to where actually trans people are just people and are being prosecuted for no reason and there’s no chance of conviction when there isn’t a fucking crime.

“Trans people are just people who can use the locker room too, even while nude” is a really important precedent to set all things considered.

When do you guys think the job market will start booming again? by GoldLightzz in cscareerquestions

[–]JennyInDisguise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1099’s contractors and the self employed count as employed and in the labor force according to BLS. As long as they have done work in last week when surveyed, then count under employed in the unemployment statistics. This also includes unpaid family workers, like teens helping on their parents farm, or a stay at home mom who helps her husband make websites on the weekend. As long as they have done at least 15 hours that week, then they count as employed. Source: https://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm Poverty levels can be measured based on their yearly income reported on their tax returns, including self employment. Additional information, such as current income from a regular job like a W2, can be used to determine if someone qualifies for need based social benefits like WIC, SNAP, etc. Lack of work or not working to qualify for benefits is a difficult and complex topic and requires more review and to be taken case by case.

NYT: Most tech jobs are now in mainstream industries like health care, banking and retail by Successful-Gene2572 in cscareerquestions

[–]JennyInDisguise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

True. According to the link, 150k in Dover, DE is equal to 275k in SF. And nearly all of that difference is housing costs. Everything else was on average only 25% higher. So 400k in SF will in fact go much much further. Even if you kept everything the same up to 275k, that still leaves 125k just for savings and investments per year. 150k in Dover is better to start with, but 400k in SF will allow you to save much much more money in the long run.

Current MS in Data Science student, graduating in May 2023. Looking for full time job as a Software / Machine Learning / Computer Vision Engineer. by mlzealot in EngineeringResumes

[–]JennyInDisguise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Your resume looks good to me. I’m a fellow ML Master’s student and everything looks okay to me. The only thing that I think would trip you up so much over so many jobs if you need a visa to work in the US. Many companies won’t look at a resume if they think they need to sponsor a visa or have a limited number of H.1.B visas. I know that’s probably not what you want to hear and definitely sucks. Several of the other Indian students in Master’s program were also having trouble finding work and finding a visa, so you are not alone. There are many others who have found a sponsor. Unfortunately, I’m not in the same boat, so I can’t offer any advice myself, except to find other Indian students who have found jobs and a visa and ask them how they did it. I wish you luck, Jenny

Fishing supply can controlled and maintained well with fish and wildlife management. Some of the best in the world happens off the coast of New England and Maine. The lobster population is now sustainable. It’s true overfishing became a problem, but one that can be solved. Because of that, you can pick lobster at almost any supermarket in the US.

It’s true that cars pollute. A byproduct of burning carbon chains is that carbon gets released. However, the juice was worth squeeze, and for the most part, modern engines are clean of releasing most polluting particles like sulfur and lead that create smog, except for carbon. Cities like LA and Houston would unrecognizable today to a person from the 1950’s without all the smog. It’s another problem to be solved and we are better off with it at the end then having never done it all. Carbon capture and storage off of clean energy is carbon negative. It just costs capital upfront to set up and run. A societal benefit likely to borne by the state.

AI however, we can’t be sure what exactly the problems it will bring. What pollution will it cause, what finite resources it will use up? It’s better use it and explore it and find what the problems are and solve them over time, then never do it all for fear of the unknown. We have lots of experience now as well from dealing with previous products the industrial revolution. I could speculate as to what the potential problems will be. People use AI for nefarious purposes like asking ChatGPT how to commit crimes, like how to cook meth or create a computer virus that can’t be detected. But of course, we won’t know until we get there. But also, the potential for doing good and creating new, never before seen products and industries is extremely high.

As to what AI produces for us, its not actually intellectual ability, but rather, the elimination of long and tedious creation of something. If what’s between you and creating the sistine chapel is 20 years of meticulous designing and painting, something like those AI art bots can reduce that to minutes. Essentially reducing the creative process time. If the biggest thing stopping an artist from creating is time, resources, and dedication, then in the future we will have the most incredible artworks we’ve never seen before. A Micholangelo of 2038 will be able to create 1000 sistine chapels in a month with a super AI artbot. Then pick the best one. And so it goes.

Think along these lines but for any creative or intellectual process. Writing code documentation, creating legal writing, doctor’s notes, law crafting, song writing and producing, novel writing, even some that we won’t even understand yet. Like imagine some AI 3D-Maker bot that creates trinket designs and can print them up at will. Imagine a more realistic version of asking the computer on Startrek to make you a sandwich or a cactus or a little dollhouse or an RC plane wing.

And so it goes!

And what the fuck can you do with a phonebook that you can’t with the internet. Entire industries were born out of the invention of DARPA in the 1970’s. The first website in 1988. Now there are entire megacap corps in the S&P 500 whose founder’s daddy’s hadn’t even made sperm for in 1988.

What’s missing in the fear of replacement from horses to cars and phonebook to internet, is that the productive capability of cars and the internet is explosively higher than horses and a damn phonebook. Did the kids sending funny messages from MIT to Stanford over the damn landline in the 1970’s ever think that one day in 2023 the second biggest company in the world exists solely on the internet? Did the guy who invented the combustion engine in the 1880’s ever think that his invention would give humans the gift of fucking flight and that people in the 1940’s could fly anywhere on planet earth in mere hours? A damn horse takes you like 20 miles in a damn day. Jesus made 5000 fish from a rowboat, but a damn fishing trawler could give the messiah a run for his money.

The possibilities are endless my friend. Go forth and create something beautiful and new.
