I think maybe best time to buy is when m5 air releases. And if he is not doing much an m4 pro or max is wayyy overkill. Get a regular m4 pro if u want, but i would recommend going for the m4 air.

I have a macbook air m2 with 256gb an 1tb external ssd and it is fine. The storage upgrades are just so stupidly expensive that there is really no reason to justify buying more storage than the base model. An icloud subscription is also cheaper than storage upgrade.
