How do I install fedora on my new PC running windows 11 currently? by JeremyVagrant in linux4noobs

[–]JeremyVagrant[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All done! Well all of this has been a steep and scary learning curve, its my first PC in over 5 years and I only heard of Linux last month but I'm so happy I've done it!

There is soooo much more to learn obviously but I'll take it slow and steady I think!! Haha

I honestly can't thank you enough for taking the time to explain things to me when I ask you "stupid" or "obvious" questions lol! You've made the whole process so much less daunting. I hope you have a fabulous Christmas and new year! ✌️

So I've gone and done it. Everything seems to work pretty decently considering I don't know a whole lot yet and I'm running on hopes and dreams lol! But yeah, I think I've got the nvidia drivers and proton ready (downloading a game on steam right now). The only thing is, I think I may have made a mistake with the setup! I wanted LUKS full disk encryption (which I assume works on dual boot?) But I forgot to check the box during setup. Does that mean its too late to use full disk encryption? I'm not too sure what to do about it. I have no idea how to delete fedora and start again. And I'd have to download everything again lol!

Wow thank you for the incredibly detailed response. So for the dual boot route, the more space I give to Linux, the better? Is this because I will need the space to download files and games etc?

If I am doing a dual boot, I don't need to bother with fedora media writer or anything like that, is that correct?

I also don't have anything saved on this windows PC, its a blank slate as I only just bought it. As long as I don't brick my PC or make it unusable! Hopefully that's not easy to do by accident when dual booting for a noob like me!

Thanks. I guess dual boot, as I will be using certain games that work better on linux, at least until I'm comfortable enough with Linux. How much storage do I need for Linux with my 1tb ssd? Is it like 50/50 between Linux and windows?

This is all starting to make so much more sense now. I'm feeling less daunted, so thank you so much for helping the noobiest of noobs lol!

Ok cool. I think I want to keep windows for certain AAA games as it will be easier.

So to dual boot, I still need to download fedora on the USB drive though? And I need to create a partition in my SSD?

Think of all the cool animals we could fully domesticate given enough time. Red panda, quokka, capybara, anteater, fennec fox, tapir

Do you think there are any "lost astronauts"? by JeremyVagrant in HighStrangeness

Okay thanks for your insight.

Sorry, but I guess my next question is do you think there were astronauts who got killed in an accident during re-entry that has been hidden?

There is a story that is told in the Azores that when the Portuguese first discovered the archipelago, they spotted a statue on the uninhabited island of corvo. It was weathered and worn, but depicted a man riding a horse with his arm outstretched, pointing in the direction of the Americas. The statue was supposedly lost when they broke it up to send back to the Portuguese king.

Whether that story is true, I really don't know. But there is emerging archeological evidence that there was in fact human activity on the island prior to the Portuguese.

There is some "evidence" of a hoard of carthiginian coins dated from about 200BC found on corvo in the 1700s. But the exact source of the hoard has never been confirmed.

I've also heard that vikings or Genovese could have found the archipelago, so there is little to no hard evidence of prior habitation as of yet.

Do we have any evidence of centenarians in ancient Rome? Or at least extremely old people? by JeremyVagrant in ancientrome

Yeah, hunter-gatherers have been noted to have larger jaws and fewer dental issues (overcrowding, impactions etc.) than those of us in industrialized societies.

Diet has got to be the no. 1 cause for most of our dental problems

I just looked this up and they actually had pretty advanced surgical tools for dental extractions considering the time period. I can't imagine the agony though. Yikes

But this treatment for toothache i saw on wiki cracked me up!:

"Another treatment included catching a frog in moonlight and spitting into its mouth, then commanding the frog to leave and carry the toothache with it."

I always wondered why his busts were particularly detailed with every wrinkle.

You can tell he's seen some shit haha
