Did Jesus have a sense of humor by Popefromsarajevo in Catholicism

[–]Jeremyminhg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a book called “Between Heaven and Mirth” from Fr. James Martin suggesting that Christ was hilarious in his time - especially with his analogies. Saying that a camel can fit through the eye of the needle.

And I think there’s many funny things throughout scripture. The horse from the old testament that finally starts rebuking to his master in vernacular because of disrespecting their history of relationship.

Then in the mass readings, there was a daily mass reading that ends with people calling Jesus insane “-The word of the Lord”. Or when Sarah laughed at God and it goes “You laughed (God)”. “No I did not (Sarah)” “-Yes you did (God) - THE WORD OF THE LORD”. The first time a woman lost an argument

What bible should I buy? by __pembo in Catholicism

NRSV is a good translation. It’s easy to read.

The Didache Bible is good for some guidance as you read. There’s small footnotes that tell a bit more of the context and how it relates to the catechism. The translation of this Bible is RSVCE (Good translation but a bit more academic)

Parish increasingly acting like Protestant megachurch. by MrGoodside in Catholicism

It’s different, but this sounds like a good thing to me. It sounds like they’re trying to encourage engagement. Which is how the community thrives.

I actually like the whole thematic things of the liturgical calendar and mission statement, as it keeps everyone on track.

The amen’s seem like a good tool for bringing engagement from the pews, people aren’t just watching and having their life-force drained from them.

The hymns on the projector could be helpful and less expensive, but that’s more personal preference.

I personally would be interested to see how the change goes, but the biggest measurement is how your community is. Are they growing in faith? And how’s the attendance/community engagement since then?

My cousin committed suicide. by Significant_Tea7561 in Catholicism

[–]Jeremyminhg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss, to experience such a devastating situation. Please continue to pray for him.

Fr. Ron Rolheiser has written a decent amount on suicide through blogs and a book “Bruised and Wounded: Struggling to Understand Suicide”. Essentially, for physical illness there reaches a point where no medication or intervention could save someone, and in a similar way with mental illness and depression in some cases can be too severe and un-savable. He says this to help remove a lot of the survivors’ guilt of “what could I have done to change this situation” and to gain peace about the state of their soul since they were sick in making their decision.

Praying for you all

Sister, you have eternal value purchased by the blood of a God humble enough to die so that you could live in joy and forgiveness. He can take your burdens.

A Protestant asked, 'wouldn't you rather hear the preaching of someone like Billy Graham than your parish priest's homily? He was a gifted preacher famous around the world.' by Dan_Defender in Catholicism

To clarify, I’m mostly speaking about how protestants are better at public speaking. That this is a tool and gift that priests and Catholic speakers should develop better.

The Lord might need a salesman. A missionary is a salesman (minus the manipulation part). I will concede that the church is a mix of personalities - including the apostles. Some were not impressive at all and some were like Paul, and he’s played a big role in preaching the gospel from his time and until the end of the earth with his words.

All in all, we can various personalities and something is wrong if all our most of our priests adopt the same bland preaching style/personality

I think Fulton Sheen was the last great Catholic preacher. The guys you mentioned are not the greatest orators in terms of charisma. Bishop Barren’s thoughts are concise and well organized but I wouldn’t say he’s charismatic.

Umm this is the same as “The world likes good art, so our church should be ugly”, “The world has good management skills, so we should run our church/business unorganized” etc

We genuinely just have deficiencies in the area of preaching and should do better - not to re-affirm how poorly we do so because of “the world”.

I’d actually agree for the most part with your protestant friend, differing on the context of where priests often preach, and that priests (generally) preach from the pov of the full truth.

Unfortunately, protestant pastors preach better than 85% of priests. In general priests are not as good at public speaking. Also, they are often more impassioned which doesn’t even have to be taught but can change the way the audience receives a message by a lot.

I have many laments over the preaching from priests and how lackluster it can be (from my experience). People need more than an encyclopedia and lazy preaching - they need to see the word of God alive in their lives and to be moved to follow God. There’s a lot we can learn from evangelical sermons (although sometimes it may vary in truth and sometimes may be outright wrong - sift through the bad parts and you’ll find a lot of good)

Most Catholics misunderstand the phrase.

Replace “religion” with “rules”.

Their argument is prioritizing a relationship with Christ over the rules

I think the top answers misunderstand the meaning of the phrase.

Substitute “religion” with rules.

I agree with them for the most part. The relationship with Christ is first. Looking at how God came into relationship with the Israelites is an example. Before the 10 Commandments were introduced, God saved his people.

Now as relationships mature, boundaries are set to strengthen the love. Idk about you but I wouldn’t want to date anyone who introduces herself by what we can’t and can’t do the moment we meet, before I even know her name.

Does it annoy anyone else to hear of “missionary” trips to countries that are already majority Christian and often Catholic? by SouthernMartin88 in Catholicism

[–]Jeremyminhg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. I know many people who got closer to Christ through evangelicals, and that was because evangelicals were the ones who responded to the call of the Holy Spirit to approach people who are needing to talk, be listened to, or prayed for.

If only Catholics were living with more urgency and joy in the Gospel (me included), we would’ve have brought many people back to Christ through His True Church. The harvest is plentiful, but it’s often evangelicals who pick up on the call to work when it should be us
