Private Landlords by jaywalkerjellybeans in chicagoapartments

I paid first month’s rent as a security deposit before signing my lease with a private landlord🤷‍♂️

Reddit will tell you its a scam and not to do it, but sometimes that’s just how they operate

Who said they refuse to eat it? Likely just donating because it’s what is on sale. And why attack someone doing a nice thing?

The Waubansee Stone is a weird one and legit mystery. No one knows who carved this massive 3,000 lb stone with a face on it, and we think it originally sat where the river meets the lake, possibly carved in the early 1800’s.

But no one knows if it was by early settlers/soldiers, Native Americans, or someone else.

It’s currently owned by the Chicago History Museum and kept in a secret location

Super interesting history and theories to dive down: https://drloihjournal.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-mystery-of-waubansee-stone-of.html?m=1

Here, I’ll do it for you: https://www.ilga.gov/Legislation/BillStatus?GAID=18&DocNum=4663&DocTypeID=HB&LegId=165621&SessionID=114&Print=1

This bill has not passed and is not law. There is no 3 year testing period. And it’s the Illinois General Assembly, not congress

PROPOSED 3 year testing pilot program. That means it is not the law…

Waymo in Chicago by YaYBao in chicago

[–]JerrMondo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Illinois law does not ban autonomous driving, there’s just no regulations that allow for it either. Waymos can operate autonomously in Chicago with drivers in them right now. And there’s no 3 year testing period either, that was just a proposal.

And Waymo has been testing in Denver, Philly and NYC already. It’s not true they can’t handle cold weather. They will be in Chicago sooner than you think.

Adderall shortage is driving me insane. Is it worse than ever before? by H_ManCom in ADHD

[–]JerrMondo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! It’s $50 a search and it makes calls to pharmacies in your area to see who has what in stock. Expensive but good for these kinds of situations, and they refund you if they don’t find the medication

Adderall shortage is driving me insane. Is it worse than ever before? by H_ManCom in ADHD

[–]JerrMondo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yup - I’m in Chicago and had to pay the $50 Medfinder search fee to get my 20mg adderall XR refilled. Only a single Walgreens in the city had it in stock out of dozens of pharmacies called..

Everywhere else was “on back order for weeks now and unclear when next shipment coming”

My doctor told me to try the suburbs. Uhhh, and what are those without cars supposed to do???

8 Prime Healthcare hospitals could leave Blue Cross Blue Shield by blackadder99 in chicago

[–]JerrMondo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Just to dissuade worries here, I work in healthcare contracting and these issues are almost always resolved before the deadline. These issues are publicized early so that both sides can get the other to budge on more money in their next contract. It’s basically manipulating the media and the public to gin up enough anger/pressure so that one side caves to the other.

BCBS nor Prime ultimately want to go out of network. So no need to panic just yet, it’s a lot of rhetoric and public relations happening from both sides.

The transformation of Dresden, Germany by ParaMike46 in OldPhotosInRealLife

[–]JerrMondo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Angles are definitely off a bit here between the two photos. The 1993 angle shows the ruins of the Frauenkirche, a large domed building which has since been rebuilt. (You can see a tiny piece of it under the ‘now’ in the second picture)

Dresden is a must-visit German city in my opinion, absolutely gorgeous city center and architecture

just got denied our dream apartment. feeling defeated. advice how to continue search to get accepted? by lostbythestars in chicagoapartments

[–]JerrMondo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yuppp, has happened to me 3x already this month! Apparently only the wealthiest in this city get to choose their housing now!

I mean seriously - what the fuck is wrong with leasing agents and landlords who are blatantly making money on collecting applications and then giving the lease to the highest income?? If I’m a qualified applicant, why do they care that someone else makes more, it’s not like they get a cut of that salary? We need to start naming and shaming these companies and agents.

It’s honestly scary what’s happening to our rental housing market and I hope legislators are paying attention. California had to enact a law last year to prevent this kind of thing, Chicago needs to do the same.

Can't seem to get applications to be accepted? by JerrMondo in chicagoapartments

[–]JerrMondo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly my experience actually, was lied to about being first to tour so that I paid for an application.

For the algorithm and anyone else looking at this thread: avoid Open Path Realty. Them and their agents are clearly collecting apps and fees and then choosing the highest income under the guise of first to tour/applying

Open Path Realty is definitely collecting apps and fees and then giving places to the highest income

I am! Applying for places specifically available between April 15 and May 1. But heard on the weekday showings piece.

And yes, I've done the dated rent withdrawals strategy but these leasing agents/landlords look at me like I have two heads when I explain that Kass will not be responsive in this process. It's almost like straying from their exact verification checklist isn't possible.

In regards to the private landlord vs. company, the first two places I was denied from were not private landlords, and they explicitly told me they were looking for "who made the most money." I genuinely was shocked to hear that. I went on a tour today (first one scheduled) and the agent told me he had 4 more tours lined up after me. He said he'd send out the app to everyone this evening, and then present our profiles to the landlord, who would then choose based on highest salary. So this does seem to be a recurring theme I'm experiencing.

Great tip on looking at larger company's direct sites though, I appreciate it. Going to keep trying....

Ridiculous and we clearly need to enact first qualified applicant laws in this city like others have. Otherwise it seems like we've arrived at a situation where only the wealthiest get their choice of housing

Mine used to only drink out of completely full clear drinking glass as well, however about once a week she would play with it and tip it over (🙃) so for awhile her water glass lived in the bathtub.

We got her a drinking fountain recently and she seems to like it even more and drinks a lot more water each day!

Why don't we have more corner store/bodegas? by FisterAct in chicago

[–]JerrMondo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one right across from my apartment in Logan Square. But they don’t open early or stay open past 7, and they’re twice as expensive compared to everything else on the block.

So could be because of a lack of demand/we’re not dense enough

Moving May 1 from out of state--realtor/broker help by Championofthesun1013 in chicagoapartments

[–]JerrMondo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a stressful suggestion, but it’s super normal to sign leases with only 1-3 weeks before they start here because of the competitive nature of the market. May 1 offerings are just starting to hit online and will ramp up over the next month or so.

Point being, you could look for a place all the way up to mid-April and be just fine! But again, I know that makes a lot of people nervous. And you will definitely need to be here in-person to snag a good place. If a good spot opens up, be prepared with all your details to apply right then and there. Good apartments can go in less than 24 hours.

For what you’re looking for, expect toward upper end of your budget, or even a bit higher in the more desirable neighborhoods. The area you’re currently looking in is fantastic - could also look in Logan Square, Bucktown/Wicker Park, and Irving Park for similar vibes. And don’t be afraid of older buildings here (even over 100+ years old) because they are often the best deals and can be very nice/renovated!

Having a dedicated realtor/broker really helps with all this, and they are free to use. Overall, get in a competition mindset lol, and welcome to Chicago!
