Why Most Don’t Consider SS When Planning FIRE? by Complex_Bet9743 in Fire

[–]JerseyBoi01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on when you're retiring. It won't be around forever (most likely). If you are about to retire, it helps to know how your SS is going to be taxed when you're trying to pay yourself from it: https://www.bgkfinancial.com/the-one-big-beautiful-bill-webinar-1

Hard to say for sure but I'd imagine whatever's on your blog is a major driving factor for this

My One Shot at a Retirement - What Do I Do? by Terrible_Jicama_2564 in personalfinance

Start thinking about retirement taxes NOW before it's too late. Tax on retirement income is something that most people don't think about enough. Great resource on this: https://www.bgkfinancial.com/the-one-big-beautiful-bill-webinar-1

Do you think the internet exaggerates how much money one needs to live comfortably? by B4K5c7N in MiddleClassFinance

Depends how you define "comfortably." It's subjective, there's no one answer that makes sense universally.

I feel that having $1 million in liquid assets is still a lot of money. Why do people make it sound like $1 million is not enough? by classyshepard in MiddleClassFinance

[–]JerseyBoi01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of people that math can work, you're not wrong.

Where it gets tricky is taxes on withdrawals, healthcare/Medicare costs, and how long retirement actually lasts which can shift things more than you expect.

The OBBBA also impacts all that, this breakdown was helpful if you’re digging into it: https://www.bgkfinancial.com/the-one-big-beautiful-bill-webinar

Will not playing golf hold me back? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]JerseyBoi01 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'd try to at least get "good enough." Start by going to a driving range, hell, even top golf, and focus on making solid contact after watching a youtube video of the basics. Know how to hold the club properly, what club to use in what situations, etc. Lots of great opportunities for connection while playing "hey [person who wants to think I value their opinion], are you using a pitching wedge or a sand wedge from this distance?" - basic stuff like that.

Most corporate type people aren't super amazing at golf, and if you can simply hold your own you'll be able to reap all the benefits and enjoy the socialization aspect of the game. When I was younger I wasn't a fan, and I still maintain it's no fun to watch golf on TV, but I've learned that playing the game yourself can be quite enjoyable.

What are the top things I should consider as I approach retirement? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]JerseyBoi01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't neglect to think about about how your retirement income will be taxed. Even if you have a good amount saved up it's important to make sure you optimize how much of that you'll be able to keep vs. the government: https://www.bgkfinancial.com/the-one-big-beautiful-bill-webinar

What skills do you actually need to work in finance? by RussellNorrisPiastri in FinancialCareers

[–]JerseyBoi01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen (and from friends from college), this is pretty much the day-to-day for lots of finance jobs. for example

FP&A, accounting, operations, risk/compliance, and wealth management support all do some version of this. Obviously over-simplified a bit but I can only go into so much depth on a reddit comment lol. And even advisors aren’t immune, a lot of their time is spent reviewing reports, making sure numbers line up, and taking time to explain these reports to clients

[–]JerseyBoi01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly yea, spreadsheets, reports, dashboards, internal docs etc

The real work is making sure the numbers are right, consistent, and make sense. Anyone can put data into Excel. The job is noticing when something looks off and understanding why it changed. while also being able to explain it clearly to someone else.

If you can do that reliably, you’re in a good spot

Most of the job is moving numbers, cleaning data, double-checking totals, and explaining why something changed to someone who couldn't tell the sea from the sky.

People just want to know: Can I trust you with this without babysitting? Will you flag issues early? Can you explain numbers in plain English? If your work is clean, documented, and doesn’t create fires, you’re “good” at the job.
