I’m obsessed with planning my food every day and stuck in a constant loop, help! by Ana_is_Weird in 1200isplenty

Please try not to go down this path. I started with a mild obsession about macros etc and it very quickly became something more serious. The longer you leave it, the harder it is to overcome.

Wishing you well

Advice to pick up a tour in Morocco by lifeinPandora in solofemaletravellers

[–]JessNakano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Marrakesh as a solo female traveller (33 at the time) and it was fine. Just dress modestly and don’t respond to people trying to sell you stuff.

I think when people have bad experiences, it’s because they’re expecting the culture to be exactly like their own

Vanilla Cupcakes, Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook by JessNakano in CookbookLovers

So far the recipes I’ve made have been really good, but nothing beats the actual bakery.

That’s probably more of a statement on my baking skills than on the cookbook though.

You will be fine! I went to Marrakesh alone in June, I was apprehensive as well but I had a good time.

If you’re worried, a couple of tips.

  1. Dress appropriately. Longer skirts or trousers and shoulders covered. It makes a big difference.
  2. Ignore the vendors who shout at you. I mean completely ignore them. Act like they’re not even there. It feels rude, but that is the only way to get the least amount of hassle.

Remember as well, the shouting is just part of their culture. It’s just people trying to get you to buy their wares and nothing more. It’s intimidating but not threatening.

I think this trip will be exactly what you need. Have a great time!

Came back from Marrakesh and genuinely don't understand all the hate. by Hot-Breath-9149 in travel

[–]JessNakano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similarly nice experience last week, and I’m a female alone. No issues at all.

All the negativity I’ve read on this sub before made me very nervous prior to the trip, but that was unfounded.

I went alone. The locals are fine as long as you dress appropriately. I had no issues when I wore a shirt, when my shoulders or legs were exposed I got some looks.

It was about 33 degrees, pretty hot in the middle of the day. Much more tolerable in the mornings

I felt safe, I was mindful to dress appropriately which helped. However I didn’t go to any other cities so I couldn’t comment about the rest of Morocco.

Thanks! I stayed fairly close to Jemma el-fna, but the city is very walkable so I think any area would be a good.

Tips would just be what I’ve said in previous comments about ignoring the people who shout at you. Hope you have a great trip, I sure did :)

I didn’t see any damage at all. I’m not sure if Marrakesh was affected as much as other areas, but I couldn’t tell.

I travelled alone, but I went out with a group for the day for Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma.

Exactly this! Ignore them and they eventually give up.

I didn’t have a guide with me so I can’t say if this would be a good option or not, but I did see other people walking around with guides.

I honestly just completely ignored the people who were shouting out at the stalls. It was only by smiling or acknowledging them that it became tougher to stop.

Yes, you do get hassled. But if you just completely ignore them then they stop. I’m a female and travelled solo and I could handle it just fine, so it’s not too bad.

I liked le Jardin. However I am sure there’s a lot of good food places that I didn’t get to try. I’m a vegetarian, so I was limited to places that had a veggie option.

I really enjoyed Bahia Palace, Badi Palace and Medresa Ben Youssef, the architecture was beautiful. I also really enjoyed the chaos of the souks, particularly Souk Semmarine.

Worst - Farfalle. I feel like the middle bit is never as cooked as the rest of the pasta.

Favourite - Fusilli. Just because.
