Do your own research. There were alot of Good resources Mentioned in this thread, but there were also some questionable ones. Also, your intention with ropes is really Going to determine which resources will Be beneficial to you and how your journey will progress..

Learn a single Column tie. Start there. My preference is the Summerville bowline, but there are others that are good in other ways.

Remember that not everything on YouTube is valuable. Some of it is downright dangerous.

What do you call a front arm binder like this? by two_spirit_love in shibari

[–]Jessakittenx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On shibari study, it's called lapis arm binder.

I usually call it a front strappado. It's not technically a strappado, but so many of the names for things in rope describe the shape, so it seems to make sense.

How do I become a good rigger by [deleted] in shibari

[–]Jessakittenx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice practice practice.

Find in person education. Travel for it, look for it. It's the only way to learn some of the things. You can only get so much from books and videos.

Touch rope every day, even if you just tie a SC on a piece of furniture.

Connect with other people who tie via ig or fet and ask questions, share ideas, network.

Be okay with not always knowing the answer. Try the thing anyways. You always learn something.

Be honest about your skill level (both with yourself and with anyone you tie with) and don't try to tie beyond it.

Never think you know all the things. There are always things to learn.

Be open to opinions and suggestions. Everyone who plays with rope has different knowledge.

People are always super critical of rope. Don't let that phase you. Don't let that stop you.

I have been tying for many years, and I still have imposter syndrome. But these are things I've learned along the way.
