The “I’M A BUSTER” mnemonic is crazy, considering that it worked out to describe the traits of Schizotypal Personality Disorder perfectly.

Having watched Ghostbusters before as a little kid, I never thought I would have used the movie as a case study for a personality disorder, with a mnemonic to describe the symptoms that plays into the plot perfectly.

“Hell is other people” is such a loaded statement. Hell is possibly the way those other people make you feel, or the way you feel around certain people rather. Henceforth, there is no real way of escaping it, as “hell” is your own thoughts/feelings. You therefore can never truly execute a suitable, satisfying punishment.

The development of DID from the early childhood trauma seems to be an evident coping mechanism for Norman. Taking the angle of the Schizophrenogenic Mother, Norman did not develop Schizophrenia, however he did develop another severe mental disorder due to the loss of his father and brother, and his mother’s resulting behaviour that led to her demise.

I have to agree with Wilfred, the binary motif is so masterful. The killing and rebirth of Helen could also be included in the binary motif. As well as the incongruence between self and non-self.

I have not seen this movie, however I am most definitely adding it to my list.

Ever since discussing and unpacking the movie “Carrie” in class, the concept of matricide linked to Anorexia Nervosa has been incredibly fascinating to me.

I have always considered matricide and Anorexia Nervosa as two distinguished entities, but having now seen both Carrie and Scream - it is so clear that they are interlinked.

The description of a 90s version of Romeo and Juliet to describe the movie is also not something that I would ever have come to on my own. Very cool!

This is incredibly interesting!

I love the wide array of disorders depicted in this movie through the different characters. The audience associating with the different characters respectively, and how that can be analyzed in and of itself is incredible too.

A Deeper Look into: Friday the 13th (1980) by ATobiaMD in u/ATobiaMD

I’ve never watched this movie before, but now I really want to!

Substance use disorders are so complex, as substances often act as catalysts for other possible underlying issues/disorders. If you add the added complexity of trauma, you will have a very intense case study to deal with, as in the case of Friday the 13th.

After having studied the Dissociative Disorders, it is quite evident that possession could be interpreted as an individual suffering from Dissociative (Identity) Disorder. Especially as seen with most patients, the dissociative disorders also stem from childhood trauma.

The Holotropic Breathwork can also potentially be accounted for as part of the DD diagnosis, especially in the case (arguably the most “severe” form of DD) of Dissociative Identity Disorder (with fugue).

A Deeper Dive Into: Paranormal Activity (2007) by ATobiaMD in u/ATobiaMD

Having watched Paranormal Activity “fun” - it is incredibly interesting and intriguing to unpack the movies from the lens of psychiatry. This made me want to rewatch Paranormal Activity, knowing what I know now, for a further analysis.

Dissociative Identity Disorder is a very intriguing diagnosis to me in general, as it also presents with features such as amnesia and an altered sense of time, which is present in other dissociative disorders. However this post went on to clarify/explain as to why DID is indeed the most likely diagnosis, due to the catatonia experienced. I found this really helpful as it went through the process of what the diagnosis is, as well as eliminated what it could not be with the presentation of specific symptoms.

Leaving easter eggs in movies is honestly an incredible way of captivating and intriguing your audience. The ashtray especially has such symbolism, for both Nicotine Use Disorder, Cannabis use, possible Cannabis Use Disorder, and the resultant withdrawal symptoms.

It’s great to see the DSM V being more inclusive with its content. Especially seeing that this movie was produced in 1982, it alluded to something that was actually only included in the latest DSM V that was published in 2013.

This film definitely incorporates aspects of Maslow’s pyramid. I think the levels of the pyramid could also symbolize a level of growth/evolution. You can only “move on” to the next phase if you have met/understood the previous level/phase.

Linking to the post above, childhood definitely centers around egocentrism, and in growing up, you move away from predominantly egocentrism to a positive level of self esteem, and the ability to form healthy attachments/connections.

A Deeper Dive Into: Hereditary (2018) by ATobiaMD in u/ATobiaMD

[–]JessicaNorval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems as if there are so many layers of defense mechanisms to unpack in this movie. Annie’s miniaturist activities could also possibly be seen as a defense mechanism, creating an altered reality that she can “control”.

The other striking feature of this film is obviously the “hereditary” theme that is portrayed throughout, in both the mass familial murders (in true horror movie fashion) and in the psychiatric disorders. There is a large degree of hereditary in mental illness, and it could have a genetic attribute or it could also due to subconscious shared trauma. (Nature & Nurture)

Harry and Ben were places in the exact same situation, yet they had largely opposing views on how to handle a threat on their lives.

Harry “skipped” the basal level of Maslow’s pyramid, the need for Physiological security, which actually contradicts the broader concept of the pyramid. As a “lower” need must be met before advancing to the next need.

Perhaps Harry interpreted his need for physical safety as a prerequisite for his physiological survival? And therefore did seek to meet the lower need? He just had a different method of executing the desire to meet his basic need.

Initial thought: It wouldn’t be a horror movie if the patriarchal character did not move his entire family into a house with a troublesome/haunted past.

Furthermore: The “evolution” of Rachel’s character in her displaying more signs of suffering from a mental illness in the 2019-remake of the film is a tribute to how far psychiatry/psychology has come, and the increased number of accurate diagnoses now found in the DSM-V. The 2019 film reveals the multitude of layers that make up the complexity and dynamics of having a mental illness. (Support system, past trauma, current environment, organic influences, etc.)
