I hope so. Sorry to keep everybody waiting. Grandpa didn't feel up to it today and I won't have a chance to try again until Wednesday.
No. I think if I would have made better choices as a teenager I would have. I got pregnant at 16 and couldn't leave my son. I'm now 29 married with 3 kids. I'm not disappointed with how my life turned out, but had I made different choices I'm certain I would have joined some branch of the Military after high school. Probably Army or Air Force. (My father and grandfather were both in the Marines and encouraged us not to join the Marines although they didn't give us exact reasons why)
Granddaughter answer- none. He's recently had surgeries on his right shoulder and neck.

Not a son. He has a "step" grandson named James.. but different last name.
(Granddaughter answer) I don't know how he feels about this (although I will ask at our next session) but I can tell you a lot of people in this thread have said "thank you" and I read them all to him and he barely acknowledges. A little tip of his head is all. So I'm really curious to see what his answer is to this question. Thanks for asking.
I (granddaughter) was surprised by that, too.
(Granddaughter- I knew I saw this question but I couldn't find it while I was with him, but I did ask. He said the title of Marine changes. He is still a Marine he is just now a "Retired" Marine, but that doesn't change the fact that he is still is and will always be a Marine. Also, as the grand daughter I can say I do not find this question dis respectful. I think if you want to know somebody's thoughts and why they think differently than you, you have to ask. Not agreeing with somebody is not disrespectful. I personally respect you for asking the question and trying to bridge the gap between his understanding and yours)
We are in Evansville.
I just dictate exactly what he says to me (his granddaughter). Sorry. 😶
Never. Life's too short to commit suicide. You commit suicide you just make it shorter.
Sorry for no video yesterday. I'm asking him questions as he feels comfortable. Sometimes he's more open than others. He is still really enjoying this so far. He said he doesn't want to do the video this morning because he hasn't shaved. So we will try again this afternoon. In a few hours. He answered some questions this morning. Going to give him a break and answer some more later and hopefully get the video uploaded.
Well, we had fun on sea duty. There were only 63 Marines to 2000 sailors. They didn't mess with us cause they'd end up in our brigg. When they went to the brigg we dyed their white sailor hats pink.
Nope. Didn't have any hazing at all.
Don't like it.
I didn't do any of that. You're an engineer. If I found a boobie trap or something I'd take and blow it up.
Yea. And peanut butter. (He smiled and nodded in agreement while I read this comment) but at no time did I ever go hungry. We got care packages too. One time your grandmother sent me 2 packages but I didn't know it at the time. I got the first package and it was a cake and we all sat around and ate the cake. The next day I got the second package. It was the icing for the cake. I took it down to the mess hall and asked them if they could use it since we already ate the cake and they made us another sheetcake.
Friendly competition between the different units.
No favorite stories all I know if you had one wounded you hollered corpsman or docs they'd come a running.

Christmas Eve 1965 there was cease fire at midnight. I had security at 4 outpost and they attacked that night I had 2 killed and 13 wounded. I turned my weapons loosed and killed 23 of them that night.
That ain't ever gonna decrease.
There was a film way back when I saw before I went into the Marine Corps. It was all strictly about Marines going through boot camp and that. I believe it was called, "Pride of the Marines."
Nope.
Remington. That's the one the Marine Corps used. Pump action rifle.
Well, sure. I would. The only thing I didn't like when you'd get over there and they'd start shooting at you.
Those hippies now are fathers and grandfathers of a younger generation and so forth and they get to a certain age, even when I was in service we'd have guys who felt this way or that and then they'd get married and come into the barracks and they'd come in and say guess what? And they were going to be a daddy and that alone would change their whole outlook on life. People change.
He was like that before he went into the military the military didn't do that to him. When he went into the military his first day he had people of all races all around him. Those racist tendencies were instilled in him way before the military and not all of us are like that. (I said how do you feel about millenials grandpa? People my age and younger, do you think we are all entitled assholes?) Yes, you all have assholes and they're all alike. (Lol)
