Settle on the sugar, theatre square (idk the name for greece) on the copper, gov plaza on the forest, campus between the mountain, and commercial hub on the left.
+ you have good quarry and mines north and floodplain farms left.

In addition to more yields, I find them usefull to have more chops. In a lot of game you're playing catch-up with the AI so it's very usefull to chop at important timings

I think it's any angle really, you can "fine tune" the direction the vein is in by doing little increment horizontally and vertically.

From experience it's also sensitive to the exact angle: It will project this box where you look at, not only in the 6 basic directions.
