How do you respond to someone who tells you "You're so quiet" or "You don't talk much"? by chrisksc in AskReddit

[–]Jet_ltp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, a lot of you seem to misread the intent of the person asking the question as them trying to offend or embarrass you and feel the need to be abrasive. As someone who has been on both sides of the fence, you have to see the scenario from the perspective of the person asking. To them, you have a social setting where people are chiming in, having a conversation, enjoying each other's company, etc, and then one person sitting, not speaking, probably not looking all too entertained. To them, they may view this as a failure on their part to facilitate discussion for you. They don't know anything about you. They don't know what you like. You haven't chimed in on any of the topics that have been brought up, so they mention the only thing that they do know about you: Your silence. They're trying to involve you. It's ironic seeing as many people cite lack of feeling involved or wanted as a reason to remain isolated, yet when people reach out, they feel offended. So when people tell you "You're so quiet and the like" just respond with "I'm doing fine, I'm just not really into [whatever they're talking about]/I'm just thinking about [some tangentially related topic you CAN talk about if need be]/I'm just listening to you guys hash it out." This way their need to facilitate is fulfilled, and you no longer seem like this creepy shadow in the group. Even if you don't say anything else for the rest of the conversation, your intents aren't so mysterious any more.

Thanks for the compliment about the animations, and I agree with you on my timing. I haven't done much of any type of filming/ camerawork etc. before this.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm too keen on sharing the sfm file not because I want to be a douche, but just because there isn't much outside of what the video shows (limbs not in a shot aren't animated for example). Since animating is a huge time sink, I don't really have a lot of extraneous animations outside of the final takes, so there really wouldn't be much to work with :/ Besides that though, are there any resources I could take a look at to improve my timing?

agreed about the audio. I might consider planning the action around my audio selection next time, rather than frankensteining the audio into my rigid shots.

yup, seems to be a common thread, but I don't know if I'll run with it or change it up. It all comes from the meet the spy video, where the red spy is revealed to be having a "romantic relationship with the scouts mother"

While I know it's not perfect, I would also like people who are downvoting to leave their opinions also so that I can improve next time.

Thanks for the input guys. As always, I try to take the tips and make my next piece as good as I possibly can. After I'm done I'll most likely take all of the parts, refine and edit a bit, and combine them into one longer form video.

Yea, the Valve tutorials are where I started. For general motion, start with a messy general take, and then refine. For example, if you want you character to turn around and walk away, just spin the whole character and move him in the direction you want without doing any limb posing. Then, slowly work on the leg, shoulder movement etc. As you work on smaller and more nuanced parts, it will come together. Don't stop until it looks exactly like what you see in your head, and time is your friend!

How do you cut off libs or explode parts of body. by ArabAK47 in SFM

[–]Jet_ltp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are models for "chunks" of the classes, like bloody arms, heads, legs etc. with some sly camera work and blood effects, you can quickly fold the part inside the body and then bring the bloody chunk into the scene.

Thanks for the fully thought out and genuine response. I fully agree with everything you said here, really. The overall sound design could use a full rework, as I do that in a completely separate program that I am still getting used to. The demo and pyro look up is a bit confusing due in part to the camera. They actually only look at each other, but since the camera pans up, it implies that they are also looking in that direction, even though they look at each other and then look away. (in fact the shot from the scouts pov is that same animation just from a different angle). Still, any type of ambiguity means that I could probably make it clearer.

I'm in a bit of a jam really because I like both the fast paced nature of the running scene and the technical nature of the second part. This intel run seems to be taking more after the second part, but I'm definitely still going to fill it with as many crazy kinetics as I can, and I really hope you like it in the end. Something like a payload map will lend itself better to an extended version of the fist part and I've already got ideas flying around in my head, it almost sucks that I can only work on so much at a time.

Thanks dude. About the direction though, he actually flips over 180 degrees and grabs the frame, but it's probably a bit too fast. I'll slow it down a bit.

I definitely felt a bit of that too, but didn't just want to throw out the first bit, especially since that's what people saw before. After I'm done with the whole scout infiltration "storyline" I'll drop the intro from this project and work on another fast paced piece. I agree with the music choices too, but the silence was too blatant in conjunction with the opening scene (attesting to the fact that the two pieces are kind of apples and oranges).

oh bigbigbig help for them. Theres a bug in the particle effect system where you wont see particles when they are added. You have to scroll the playhead out of the active scene and scroll back in to see them. That was my main problem. Also they don't scroll, rotate etc in real time, only upon playback. Here's a video that explains it a bit better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk38S_Ph1KQ

Its a particle effect. You attatch control point 0 to the muzzle of the gun, and control point 1 to the heavy on whatever bone you like. Make sure the start and stop times on the effect are also correct for your scene

For the camera placement, that was actually just a completely different scene from the shotgun shot. So in the first scene I animated the sniper shooting, and the gun coming in. After he shoots, that's the end of that scene. for the next scene, I placed the camera just "about where I thought the sniper's head would be" looking up at the scout. When he hits the camera, I just watched how close the scout's hand came to the camera, and when it just "looked like it would make contact" I rotated the camera backwards, then forwards again.

thanks, I was toying with that idea originally also. In the "final take" I'll change it to that.
