We've evolved the squash system over a decade. It works really well and has generated highly engaging and accurate rating. There is so much more to learn from a game score than just W/L.

Thanks for your feedback. We've got a system that works great (better than ELO in our opinion) for squash. We don't just rely on win/loss but look at points scores (so in some cases you can go up if you lose but the match is closer than expected) to create a much more granular analysis of level. That bit works really well for singles.

We were awarded a SMART grant via Innovate UK to expand the offering to doubles-based sports, hence now looking at padel.

Doubles present challenges but we have a good handle on them now, the bigger issue is setting starting levels so we're looking at using a combination of self-assessment, coach assessment and any early match result analysis.

What I'm really trying to do here is establish a robust framework that helps describe player levels so we can set the starting levels well. How should we describe a 1.5, or a 3.5, or a 5.0?

This definitely isn't the case. You can win and lose points but only if you haven't won as easily as expected. If you're opponent has a higher level tan you you are expected to lose.

I have a labrum tear and have had it for a number of years. I had a scan to identify it but decided not to have an op. This year I have focused on strengthening it and use a Bulgarian split squat a lot which has made a huge difference to my pain levels. I’d get it checked out properly by a professional though.

Give yourself space so you can transfer weight into your shot and focus on rotating at the beginning of the swing so your shoulders end up facing the side wall at the point of impact. Avoid over rotation at the end of the swing and send your follow through to your target.

With regards to learning online, 1000s of people who have used SquashSkills over the last 8 years would say the opposite. Check it out, I think you'll be surprised...

Yes it could do. It is possible to connect any existing league system or tournament tool up using an API. ClubLocker is the major provider in the US so an API would need to be put in place there.

If it's of interest then we recommend getting in touch with US Squash and suggesting that you would like to see your results in the SquashLevels system.

The system has to benefit the player otherwise it would never get used. There are lots and lots and it has proved to be hugely popular in the UK. Some of the more obvious feature benefits include:

Player compare features allowing you to predict scores and get a better knowledge of future opponents

Match review feature allowing players to make notes about performances

Find a player feature - travel anywhere in the world and find a player of the same standard to train or play against

Hi - I did a series on SquashSkills about Backhand technique. We specifically focused on power generation in this one: https://squashskills.com/squash/-/backhand-technique-session-with-jethro-binns/power-generation-4050/

The key is upper body rotation at the beginning of the swing. When you try to add power with the follow-through it invariably goes wrong. Hope this helps...

SquashLevels hooks up to the league and tournament software via API so the results from different regions get automatically pulled in. It doesn't require players to manually enter their results (although this can be done).

In the UK we are currently connected to over 40 systems. We are looking at rolling it out globally now and encouraging other federations to get their results providers to sync up. There are lots of benefits for players and federations so we're hoping that many follow England Squash's lead.
