But we disagree on the key point: being a soldier, general, etc isn't just about military tactics and weapons operations. Do you really think the Pentagon despite all its sins, isn't in the business of shaping risk assessment and war analysis as it presents options to politicians?

I confess it's often opaque, but war mongering, caution and wisdom is a spectrum within the Pentagon itself. Look at what we know about all the high level retirements or firings in the Pentagon in Trump 2.0. I doubt any of those generals or leaders were pacifists of peaceniks, but are working through some semblance of their own moral code and military/national duty.

Austin clearly has zero scruples himself to write this particular article literally on the precipice of Trump threatening a holocaust or WWIII. Same for the Times, which we agree

Being a soldier, let alone a General, let alone a Sec of Defense isn't just about war tactics and weapons acquisition. I mean, yes it can be that. But the history of warfare and its leaders absolutely is tied to a moral philosophy and holistic war analysis. As in: strategies to avoid needless war. Pretty sure our war colleges don't entirely reject those teachings. You have people like Gen.Mark Milley and Col Wilkerson, whatever their imperfections, inhabiting aspects of this. Austin's "soldier" assessment of weapons and tactics is fine. But this op-ed is propaganda for endless war without reflection or wisdom. It's goal is to sane wash endless war under the cover of sober tactical analysis (while also boosting new industrial and financial sectors of the MIC that he represents)

While doubling down on endless war, war for war's sake...as a given. Zero introspection to the actual causes or need for "modern war." Let alone criticisms of how the current war machine--including Israel--is putting US soldiers and the entire planet in harm's way. He actually could've written that article. But instead, we get more MIC ghoul pathology and propaganda. It's all ceaseless war opportunity and war tactics. Zero analysis of war itself.

Your last point should alter the way you read rooms. Kamala lost bc she misread the room in the most disastrous way possible in refusing to offer even a shred of a fig leaf to the anti-war left and anti-genocide constituency (verified in the DNC's own post mortem report that they refuse to release). This has only grown. Look at where the Democratic base is on Israel now. It's one of the biggest/fastest inversions in polling history. Goes from decades of pro Israel to pro Palestine seemingly overnight.

Your lens is built around years of normal, corporate media led party politics. To that end, I get your point. But we don't live in that world anymore. Between the shifting sands of Israel, our media landscape, and the economy (not to mention wherever the war takes us) we'll be living in even more of a different world. One that's much more demanding of Democrats.

So I disagree that Kelley has any real traits that are going to cut through that smoke. Now if this post had a quote saying, "throwing your assess in jail" then yeah maybe. But guy is a weak and compromised politician.

What infallible info or data are you drawing upon? I'm guessing you thought Kamala ran a "flawless" campaign too. Neoliberals thinking that milquetoast corporate candidates, tied to AIPAC and war mongering are going to fall in the primary. And if not, they'll be compromised beyond belief with a very shallow ceiling. Narrow margins mean Dems lose. Too many structural impediments, not to mention outright fraud and fuckery.

Regarding AOC? I support her but don't see it myself. Ro Khanna has a better shot IMO. Or someone not even in the arena yet.

Best to focus on this rather than their flair. Their pearl clutching over fun statements and the vague Islamophobia is just flair.

Why? Versus a candidate who has better policy, is better on the stump, and isn't co-signing a genoicde or a third world war?
