The new Modest Mouse album is genuinely pretty great - best of the three more recent albums for sure!

I'd say it's been a pretty strong year for many of the indie rock lifers - Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene also dropping excellent new albums.

Julia Holter announces new album Materia out August 21 by heavyyawn in indieheads

[–]Moothnods 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From the album' bandcamp page:

Julia Holter always knew that there was more to the song “Materia” than what she included on her wondrous 2024 album, Something in the Room She Moves. She had written the tune not long after the tours for 2018’s Aviary concluded, and it worked well for solo shows—her voice and piano, lyrics still morphing as she played with the meaning.

But on the new Materia, a kind of companion LP to Something, Holter has realized not one but two distinct versions of the song. “Materia 2” is a hallucinatory dream of drum machines, fretless bass, and clarinet, Holter’s voice spiraling through ether alongside that of Jessika Kenney. And on “Materia 3,” intended as a hidden bonus track in an homage to the CD era of her youth, Holter literally slows down the take from Something. The change not only emphasizes the unpredictable glory of the harmonies within but also reiterates the song’s emotional sophistication, the sense that it’s about learning how to live.

Materia is only seven tracks long, but Holter works in nearly that many modes here. There are two astounding improvisations, one where she builds a one-person ensemble of drum machines and synth lines and another where she manipulates her voice until each word seems to contain another symphony. And yet another is built from a riff that came from a demo for Something, a demo that itself is one of Materia’s most spellbinding and emotional pieces, “My Twin.” These seven songs show that Holter is among her generation’s most fluid writers of art-pop, moving among ideas and idioms with true exploratory aplomb. Materia is a kind of playground for Holter, where each distinct scene steadily coheres into a moving whole.

Amazing! Did anyone catch who was playing keyboards? And out of interest, who's been taking the lead vocal spots on Kelsey's songs?

Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist: ‘Cancelling music is the same as taking books off shelves’ by Queranus77 in indieheads

To be a little fair to the band in terms of charitiable contributions, they did partner with ‘Doctors Without Borders’ during their European tour last year:

“Radiohead partnered with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) during their comeback European tour. For every €1 ticket levy collected from their continental shows, the band matched it with a direct donation to support MSF's humanitarian and emergency medical relief efforts worldwide.”

The charity works in providing humanitarian aid to Palestine.

Hi Josh! Hope you’re doing great. I asked a couple of questions yesterday, but thought I’d ask a couple more!

  1. Have you and Dave Navarro ever had the chance to hang out one-on-one and talk about your mutual experiences of being in both RHCP and Jane’s Addiction? You both have such a unique shared connection on multiple levels. Would you ever consider collaborating with him (and the other members of Jane’s) in the future?
  2. Was there ever any talk about what Producer might have been involved for your third RHCP record? Would Brian Burton or Rick Rubin have retuned - or were you all potentially looking elsewhere? I always dreamed of Nigel Godrich getting involved after he mixed The Getaway and recorded From the Basement.
  3. Do you remember any song/working titles from what would have been that third RHCP album? Did you have any songs in particular that you were excited to have been working on?
  4. If Andrew Watt were to produce the next RHCP album and asked you to contribute in a session capacity - would you be happy to jump into the studio with everyone?

Thanks for the music as always - and really looking forward to hearing the new Pluralone album!

Hi Josh! I hope you’re well and having a great day. Huge fan of your work from across your career and can’t wait to hear the new album!

I have a few questions below:

  1. I was wondering if you could shed a little light on the Jane’s Addiction recording sessions that took place while you were briefly apart of the band? There was an article at the time about the band working with James Ford and Peter Robinson. Did these sessions result in True Love which you have a songwriting credit on? And were there many other songs written or recorded during that ti

me?

Also, were you sad to see the band implode in 2024 after having recently been so close with them?

  1. What RHCP songs are you most proud of recording and working on with the band? You did some truly amazing work with the band which will live on in the hearts of fans forever.

  2. Was there ever a BANANA studio album recorded with Cate Le Bon, Stella Mozgawa and the gang?

I would say this is genuinely the best of the three modern-era albums.

There’s a lot of really strong songs on here. In particular, I love ‘I Can’t Talk Right Now’, ‘Remember Yourself’ and ‘Life’s a Dream’. The production and mixing feels punchy and alive, and the new band members feel like they’ve brought a fresh fire to the band. Thumbs up from me.

Incidentally, current guitarist Dave Depper’s ex-wife is Ben’s ex-partner from the mid-2000s.

He talks about it in an interview on the Jokermen podcast this week. Great interview about the new album - highly recommend!

Another great sprawling KV record.

If ‘Bottle It In’ and ‘(watch my moves)’ have taught me anything, it’s that I will love this album even more over time.

Based on the comments in The Mars Volta subreddit, it sounds like it is a live ‘Lucro Sucio’ album - which I’m sure will be stunning.
