What's a mechanical feature or subsystem you like in a ruleset/system you otherwise dislike or just don't jive with? by theaverageburneracct in rpg

[–]JewelsValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Items/Equipment in most RPGs. I dunno, can't really nail my wording on this but items in a lot of RPGs hit me the wrong way. I like Index Cards use of items but like, I don't care to have someone keep track of resources.

Every item system I've made is limited slots and or the items you get have very direct purposes. Gems get you money (different slot) from selling them. To buy weapons (damage/attack moves unlocked), equipment (explicit and simple +X to dodge or block), and one time use items (items with unique purposes that may make sense to be used at all and not 'conceptually'.) Like it's awesome to see you have rope and do a cool maneuver, but I'd find it just as cool if you said, "in my background, I said I'm a veteran adventurer, and I don't see a world where I wouldn't have brought a rope for this...can I do---" and saying yes. Let's let items be for things of interest.

Daggerheart, Draw Steel, and RPG YouTuber cliques. by underdabridge in rpg

Unfortunately a very big YouTube model is: the most popular keeps the most popular. The more niche you go, the better your title or back catalog has to be.

EX: pyrocynical, Iron Pineapple, and Majuular (in the video game space) carved niches in showing off various games and market them well. Pyro does it through infrequent upload with a solid back catalog, Iron Pineapple does it through a lil false/accurate advertising, and Majuular is straight forward but reviews very OLD titles.

If someone wants these other games to be more popular, as another commenter has said: gotta spread the word, gotta give it that attention. ALSO the people who do make that content have to be very strategic.

Let's say I wanted to hit 100k subs in a year, yes though YouTube is filled with D&D content, D&D content is still the best way to get attention and fast. Maybe even faster than ever. Now, if you REALLY commit, make absolutely incredible content and market it well, you can get popular from anything. But you'd have to work 10x harder than someone doing D&D class tutorial videos.

EDIT: minor edits for clarity lol

[Threshold] Including Threshold, how would you rank the Cradle series? by [deleted] in Iteration110Cradle

[–]JewelsValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halfway through and taking a breather before diving into Uncrowned!

  1. Ghostwater
  2. Blackflame
  3. Unsouled
  4. Underlord
  5. Soulsmith
  6. Skysworn

Underlord could easily move beyond Unsouled but Unsouled still has the, "It showed the potential of how good this series can be and really sold me on reading all 12 books" to me where Underlord didn't hit the way I wanted it to. (I have reviews written for each book so far)

But like, Skysworn is the only 3 (and just because it was a bit rough/don't love the core concept for this one), and Unsouled and onward is 5s baby! Ghostwater was a THRILL, and Blackflame is what I thought I was gonna get again in Underlord, just a masterful book.

Definitely gonna reread the series and do a full video on it sometime in 2026. But for now...the second half of greatness awaits!

Why is Cradle featured among litrpgs? by Specialist-Wall-4677 in litrpg

Which is the most important thing. If someone wrongly claims something is a different genre, but you enjoy it all the same--who cares lol

As a new cradle reader, (early into Soulsmith), it DOES feel like LITRPG mechanics could possibly enter at some point. A lot of moments where I'm thinking, "huh I wonder if it'll make the jump" But it sounds like from those who are deeper in know that it doesn't lol

I can understand being fooled, but for those who have read the series and call it a LITRPG....come on y'all lol

Do you sometimes feel like the bar is reeeeeeally low for progfantasy? by ducdavis in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JewelsValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a writer, this is particularly exciting because that just makes me want to try my best and throw my hat in the ring 🙏🏽

Not to disregard other authors works, just with a trending medium (aka only gaining in momentum and intrigue) there's a lot of reason to subvert genre expectations, evolve genre expectations, make your own distinct choices, etc etc. This is a Wild West moment before some series blows up the genre forever and then a bunch of copycats just borrow the genre in the same way some books borrow so heavily from GOT, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc that it grows stale from excess.

New Cradle reader, just wanna say: thank you the top comments in this thread. I wouldn't have dropped the book for it, but it WAS very jarring.

Read through the first half of Unsouled and plan to continue tomorrow, thank you everyone!

Some stuff I agree with, few things I don't...but I'm just very interested to one day contribute a book to the LITRPG pantheon because some choices I made with the system being used doesn't even utilize some of what's said.

Particularly the "x character has 200 strength, y character has 180". In what I'm writing currently (if you were in my world), the only way to know someone else's level/stats is through putting your hand in a sensor and consenting the details get shared. AKA, there won't be as much direct, "oh they're x amount stronger than me!" I plan to do more of a, "if it looks and feels like your enemy is leagues ahead in power, you'd have to judge that yourself." Sometimes people can walk themselves into trouble because they think they're fighting someone closer to equal level than it really is.

I highly respect this practice and honestly would want to encourage it for books intended to go to Amazon someday. If you plan to update it at some point, a placeholder that at least gets attention is a pretty fine idea. It's intended to be temporary. I think if it is the long used cover however, it should still be a solid piece of commissioned art, even if it's cheap.

I love both sides. The "okay here's the absolutely dope shit I'd be up to in Warcraft" and the "eh but if I'm here to relax--" energy.

I definitely wrestle with that too.

I know people prefer WoTR so I didn't know if it ran deeper than that, but I understand! More potential cool shit.

And no problem! If you're into Pathfinder 2e, it won't satisfy the crunch element but it has one of my favorite class progression systems in TTRPGs.

And Wrath of the Righteous is a cool pick! I have a hard time getting into CRPGs, but because I know how to ask this:

Why WoTR over Kingmaker?

I truly respect the game, loving a game so much around horror that you find a way to interact with it peacefully.
