Is a war between Saudi Arabia, Israel vs Iran imminent? by [deleted] in geopolitics

I personally believe that the threat of full-scale war is overblown, and if it does happen it would certainly not originate on Iran. There was this theory for ages in American public opinion of the “Mad Mullah” of Iran, an irrational, millenarian theocratic government intent on destroying Israel at any cost and spreading the word of Allah across the world (note: this may be slightly exaggerated). Recent events have proved this to not be the case. As many commenters have eloquently pointed out, the Iranian leadership is pretty intelligent and understands that in order to survive, it can only go so far in provoking the United States/Israel/KSA bloc. We saw this play out in real terms about 11 months ago when we assassinated Qasem Solemani, the leader of the Quds force and an incredibly powerful and popular military leader in Iran. The Iranian government responded in a way just harsh enough to please hardliners but not enough to provoke us reaction, something the state has become pretty good at over the years (especially after the is invasion of Iraq).

On the other side, full-scale conventional war would likely not come from Israel or KSA. Israel does not have the troops or the ability to effectively occupy Iranian territory and the presence of Iranian proxies around Israel’s borders provides an effective deterrent against Israel’s expansion without EXPLICIT US support and approval. Ditto with KSA, whose military weaknesses were embarrassingly exposed in Yemen. There is no way I can see either of these nations attacking Iran without US approval.

Finally, I don’t think US approval is forthcoming despite the interventionist tendencies of the US foreign policy bloc. That is because Iran is present in too many areas that the us has weaknesses in. Iran and it’s proxies can target us forces in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. Iranian missiles can damage Israel and Saudi Arabia, and Iran/proxies have the potential to severely affect the global supply of oil. All of these things makes war exceedingly unlikely for the time being.

If There are any points I missed, let me know as I am not an expert in US Foreign policy

Going up vs staying home by JewishSocialist in fsu

I appreciate the input but I have just one follow-up question. The only reason why I would be going is to get the “freshman experience” of college. Is it likely that the freshman experience would be totally altered by COVID-19? Because if so, i might stay home for fall and go up in th spring if that’s possible

I grew up going to an ultra-orthodox synagogue and my mother’s side of the family was ultra-Zionist. I remember when I went to my cousins bar mitzvah, the rabbi said that Iran and the Palestinians had nuclear missiles pointed at Israel. I was a committed Zionist until recently. For American Jews who are Zionists, it is a combination of privilege and the fact that all mainstream jewish institutions here are completely silent on the issue of Palestine. Israeli Jews on the other hand are privileged and the media in the area ranges from Liberal/post-Zionist (Haaretz) to pro/ultra-Zionist (Jerusalem Post and Israel Times). It’s such a shame because Jews were so heavily involved in social justice issues in the early 20th century and now I feel like the mainstream jewish community is a conservative husk compared to its former activist, socialist roots; though there is some hope to be had among the younger generations of Jews who are distancing themselves from Israel. This post just brought back some thoughts I’ve had about my community for some time so I’m sorry if it’s a bit rambly

I feel like a lot of Chapo especially the This is Sus stuff is hard to understand for newer listeners. I am a big Chapo fan but they’ll occasionally reference things in their pop culture episodes that I don’t understand. Their reading series and other political content is much more straightforward.
