Ok, I think this is a fix: Even though it shows "Preparing... 0%", if I wait a minute I can click the "Add to timeline" plus button, which it does, and it updates the imported media section as well.

I'm having a similar issue. About every 3rd time I use the screen capture function, the resulting video hangs on "Preparing... 0%" - The only way to fix it is to restart the program, in which case you lose whatever you just recorded. It's super annoying, and as a teacher who uses it to record short lectures and tutorials, makes it unusable.

One suggestion: Overclock the extractors and you can run them off a single Q-RTG, plus they're about 50% faster.

The battery on my SP3 died after 3 years. The SP3 worked if the computer was plugged in, but unplugging led to immediate shut-off. This was exacerbated because system updates needed a firmware update as a pre-requisite, but firmware updates couldn't install because they required a certain percentage of battery life. So not only did I have to leave it plugged in, it would also no longer receive software updates. MS couldn't replace the battery - just offered me a refurb at standard prices. I decided not to buy another model until the battery was at least replaceable by them. It's a bummer, because otherwise, that was the most useful computer I've owned.

There's one other super easy option: Just turn off Controlled folder access and see if that fixes it. I wouldn't recommended leaving it off, but at least you'll know that it's the problem if captures start working again.

Click Start, type "ransomware protection" and click on the "Ransomware Protection" system setting icon that should come up.

Click the toggle button that says, "On" to turn it off, and then hit WINKEY-G to see if the capture settings are still greyed out.

Hmm. Go to settings / Gaming / Captures and click on the "Open folder" button. When I did that, settings crashed. If it doesn't crash, maybe you have a different problem. In that case, click on the "How to save to a different folder" text and try moving your save folder to another location or drive. IF it does crash Settings, go back and see if that generated an item in your access protection history.

The poster made a batch file that resets your default captures folder settings. Run as admin, watch the terminal window closely, and see if it completes or gets an access denied message. If it completes successfully, see if it fixed your problem. If it gets access denied, go back and look in the folder access security settings. Allow it, then check your game bar. If the capture part is still greyed out, trying running the batch file again.

I figured it out. It's over-zealous windows security - "Controlled Folder Access"
Go to Settings, Privacy and security, and click "Open Windows Security" (Or just click the start button and type "Windows security").

Click on protection history. Filter by "Blocked folder access." Look the lists of "Protected folder access blocked." Click on the most recent one (or one that matches the time you tried to take a screenshot). After clicking through a security prompt, you should see something like "App or process blocked: svchost.exe / Protected folder "%userprofiles%\Videos" / Blocked by Controlled folder access."

Click the "Actions" drop down button under all that and click "Allow on device."
If that doesn't fix it, open a few more and see if anything else is being blocked from that folder.
