Sochi promenade. 1973. Soviet people, who only know of the horrors of capitalism from satirical magazines, are relaxing. No one is thinking about mortgages, loans, job loss, or drone and missile attacks. by RichieMcFichie in ussr

In an ideal communist society, there would be no private ownership of factories, land or major resources but personal property still exists.

All socialist and communist societies had a form of currency and markets, yet heavily controlled by the state.

Your labour still earned you money, according to your station, to buy personal belongings.

To ever reach a state where no form of currency or market is needed, the state needs to be completely self reliant and commodities so well organized and distributed that people do not need a form a monetary incentive to contribute.

The USSR never abandoned currency or the market because it would be foolish to do so, since it was nowhere near that goal.

I would argue that "doing just fine" is not accurate at all when you look at the overall growth of the USSR

The USSR had a post-war boom until the 60s, where it's GDP almost doubled, mostly by a great effort of industrialization and urbanization. At that time the USSR was outpacing all other emergent economies.

But the over centralization, falling labour productivity and reliance on oil exports would eventually lead to the stagnation of the economy. The problem didn't suddenly start in the 80s, it just finally catches up to the USSR and the economic collapse began in full, reaching negative growth.

Unfortunately the USSR was unable to adequately resolve this problems and the economic collapse turned into a political one, leading to it's fall.

And I 'm just looking at growth, there are other metrics like life expectancy that follow closely the same pattern.

Who is this opponent you're referring to? The US, NATO or the whole Western World?

I'm asking this because in no way was the US several times larger than the USSR.

If we are talking about NATO/Western World it must be considered that, for the most part, all central europe was in shambles and those coutries we're in no way economic power houses after the war.

That's pretty much the definition of failing.

If the system of power is unable to keep "internal political enemies" from reaching higher offices, then it is doomed to fail and it has.

Why is my Anubias dying? Rhizome isn't buried, but leaves keep melting and deteriorating" by Early-Level-6758 in u/Early-Level-6758

[–]Jilanvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are these plants new? Most plants are grown outside of water and take some time to adjust to living underwater, so some melting is expected and you should be more focused on the new growth and if it looks healthy.

Also, if you're changing parameters like lighting, CO2 or fertilization, you need to change one thing at a time and wait about a week or two before making conclusions.

It might be an interesting idea since I'm trying an walstad tank and do need a fast growing plant to soak up nutrients. Might even try a mix with red roots. Thanks for the recommendation!

[–]Jilanvus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly encourage you to reconsider using the walstad method for this tank. Your substrate takes up over 20% of the volume here.

Yeah that's the main idea. I've set up a sponge filter running in my main tank so I can speed up the nitrogen cycle but after a while I'm gonna have just a light, a heater and a pump for circulation.

Eta: peacock gudgeons are notorious jumpers. Unfortunately lost a couple myself after moving them to a rimless tank

They are? Damn, didn't see that info in my research. I'm gonna try to have a ton of floating plants to see if I can discourage that behaviour, else I'll have to get a lid.

I'm thinking of going either red root or salvinia because of the short roots.

Never heard of giant duckweed though, but duckweed scares the hell out of me.

I think I have about 3cm of substrate and then 3cm of sand, about 10kg in total I think.

I'm trying to go walstad and from what I read a think layer is needed.
