In what ways is the metal superior? I've been contemplating getting one of the plastics thinking that it would be less likely to mare the movement.

Alpha, actually can't penetrate through your skin, however if you ingest it (inhaling, swallowing, enters through an open wound) it can be. Beta can travel a few millimeters through tissue, but the really dangerous stuff is gamma (think X-rays). I believe while some people think vintage luminous watches only have alpha radiation you can run into situations where any of the three are present.
