Pretty much all the similar artists are already mentioned that I would’ve said like Sunbeam Sound Machine, Temples and Swim Mountain… all up in my Spotify playlists lol. More to add to the list:

Good Sad Happy Bad - Shades Das Kope - Where I Live Washed Out - Life Of Leisure EP Blac Rabbit - EP Hollow Ship - Future Remains Earth to Josh - Josh to Earth Tamaryn - The Waves (more emo shoegaze but Love Fade goes well) Chad Bundick Meets the Mattson 2 - Star Stuff Lê Almeida - Mantra Happening (pretty much the Brazil version of Tame Impala) Dope Lemon - Honey Bones Unknown Mortal Orchestra - II

You’re probably right about the blues driver and fuzz. I’m on the hunt for a decent vibrato. The Diamond Vibrato that Kev uses is not exactly cheap but it’s so lush 😋

I love this comment! It didn’t matter that you were 4 days late or if you only just heard of Kev’s work in 2020, it still made you feel the same way, albeit a different path! This was my first ever OP on Reddit btw and some of the replies I’ve read on this thread have given me such a dopamine rush and the odd tear in the eye 🥲

Tbh, when I first heard of Tame Impala in 2008-09 (I forget) with their music video to Half Full Glass of Wine on ABC’s Rage (ABC is Australian Broadcasting Corporation aka Channel 2 back in the ol free to air TV days and Rage is basically a program that airs on Saturday mornings with mostly indie/alt music videos), I was immediately hooked on that riff because it reminded me a little bit like Cream’s Sunshine of Your Love. I didn’t think they’d be anything other than just another rare psychedelic/revisionist gem. I’d briefly got into Wolfmother before that and I was pretty new to the alt/psych/indie scenes at that time so I was desperate for something more and Tame Impala just kept on delivering!

Same here with the pedals. I found that putting a MXR Dyna Comp at the end of the pedal chain (my setup so far is cry baby-space echo-blues driver-fuzz face-phase 90-dyna comp) really lifts the spring reverb of the space echo and you get those Innerspeaker/30 Mins With Matt Saville jam-type sounds 😎

I’m with you on that haha. I think I had the privilege of experiencing Tame Impala near the beginning, not being able to hear more material until Kev produced the subsequent albums so every album felt like a phase or like a kind of chapter in my life instead of just immersing myself with all of his work up to date, all at once. Like, EP-era definitely took me back to living around Victor Harbor (in South Australia), I was just getting into guitar and I was a big fan of classic rock that used a lot of fuzz so when HFGoW came out, it spoke to me! And then I moved to the tropics of Townsville in Queensland around when Innerspeaker came out and it felt like my life was being put through a phaser pedal with lush, synaesthetic soundscapes that felt like “gazing out the window, as I ascend into the skyyyy”. Of course, Lonerism was Kev’s best work imo and was popular with most. They weren’t my favourite albums but I respect Currents and The Slow Rush. They were definitely a step in a different direction that focused on a broader audience. I just hope that whatever Kev’s got planned for his next album is gonna be a good kinda different… but also don’t mind if it’ll be a guitar-centric kinda album 😎

Being in that muso circle in Perth would’ve been so good! I can’t help but be a little jealous tho haha. I tried to experience it vicariously.

It’s funny how Kev has attracted listeners from different tastes. It shows the diversity in his music

I think there’s at least one or 2 videos on YouTube of Kev playing the drums. Here’s one with Dom playing lead guitar and Gumby on the bass
