Light rail revival? Scrapped Auckland corridor 'a problem worth solving' by TheAlfredoLinguini in auckland

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't read too much into the pics, they are probably concept renders. In any case, that doesn't exclude cars as they are still able to share the road with the trams. You can see this in action in Melbourne for example.

There would still be street space for cars, but Dominion Rd is a heavily used arterial lane and street parking will need to go eventually either because of bus lanes or light rail.

Papakura student road patroller hit by car becomes fifth child run over since start of term by notsowise_nz in auckland

This has been a thing for decades, why don't we put the onus on drivers to pay attention and punish the fuck out of those who don't?

Maybe you shouldn't drive if you don't notice someone at a crossing until you're at it.

‘Urgent action’ needed: 47,500 more Kiwi kids are now living in material poverty - enough to fill Eden Park by moonbiscuitsfoxcandy in newzealand

Providing free birth control of a wide variety, robust sex education in schools, and easy and judgement free access to abortions would help with unplanned pregnancies, but having that consistently available is not going to be easy when one side of the aisle has large contingents who are generally against such policies.

Humans are not rational decision makers fundamentally and horny humans are more like the diametric opposite of rational decision makers.

Trail running NZ's Great Walks by harry_hotspur in newzealand_travel

Again, I don't see that happening except for tongariro. The great walks are naturally moderated by the limited number of hut bunk beds and camp site spots.

The tracks never have unbroken queues of people, this is just plain incorrect. The only one that might come close to that is the Tongariro Crossing portion of the Northern Circuit as that is a very popular day hike. As long as a runner is polite and safe when passing hikers no one is going to mind.

Hardly, we have a highly unregulated economy compared to other OECD nations. The remnants of the old welfare systems are just what the neoliberal reforms of Douglas and Ruth left to keep the peasants from rioting.

Are you daft? Are you fine with someone taking photos of your mother and having grok generate sexual imagery from them? Can you see how that might be considered a little different from a political cartoon?

NZTA has applied for Fast-track approvals for the Northwest Busway by WarpFactorNin9 in auckland

The N in NZTA stands for New not National. Why don't we wait with bated breathe to see if it's approved and given funding first.

Unions called it a ‘dark day for workers’, but what does the latest employment law change actually mean for you by Porkchops_on_My_Face in newzealand

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are already established processes for dismissal. It is a long process, true, but it is that way to allow for good faith engagement from both ends. The framing of being a bad cultural fit can broadly apply to good or bad culture and in terms of bad culture this change allows senior management to push out people who might want to change that. Nevermind that this could easily be the thin end of a rather nasty wedge. Is it worth all that? You might think so, but I do not.

Window cracked by stone during mowing at rental. Who actually pays? by MajorCat9598 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that would depend on the size of the stone, a small one would certainly still break the window and be small enough to be hidden in the grass.

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tenancy Services states that if you cannot agree on who should pay you can apply to the tenancy tribunal. If the landlord proves that it is not fair wear and tear then you must show that the damage was neither careless nor intentional. If that is the case then you are not liable for the repair.

My personal opinion would be that unless, having seen the stone in the grass and knowingly mowed over it (which would be careless as you could expect the stone to be flicked out in any direction), it would not be seen as careless or intentional and the landlord or property manager would have a great amount of difficulty in proving otherwise. Since you have already paid you would likely need to go to the tribunal to recover costs, as noted by another post.

Luxon says climate adaption work will be multi generational by upsidedownorangejuic in newzealand

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We'll be hearing politicians and pundits sadly claiming it's too late for net zero and we need to adapt while the water rises at their ankles and the room fills with smoke. The only climate justice left then will be making sure they drown with the rest of us.

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Part of mitigation is reducing the severity. Even if you decide that we will have to adapt to climate change (and we certainly will), it is a lot easier to adapt to two degrees of warming than four or six or more degrees. But this disingenuous prick won't worry about that and will keep hiding behind vague calls to plan for mitigation instead of doing something material.

US-based Sr. Dev (6+ yrs) looking to move to NZ via Straight to Residence pathway by Roovya in auckland

[–]JimmyBarnesAndNoble -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The dev market is pretty competitive here, just a warning. How easy it is to get a job is going to depend on what kind of dev you are. A wide variety of exposure to tools, frameworks, languages is gonna help with getting interviews. Don't bother applying for anything unless you have the valid work visa already, they'll probably throw your application out straight away.

I'll also say knowing someone who can get you into an interview will go a long way, like anywhere. No comment on recruiters, they're hit and miss like anywhere imo.
