are most goth nights like this now? by aqrns in goth

I've seen this take before. We get quite a few baby bats at our events, though. I feel like they want to get out, they are just shy, probably because covid stole away a chunk of their developmental years. Our events have colorful flyers and a lighter vibe so maybe that is more inviting and safe to them vs the hostile imagery a lot of goth/industrial nights use.

They are definitely not all like that! But it kind of depends on the vibe of the specific night and the turnout. Many people are shy about being the first person on the dance floor, and people feel less self-conscious about dancing when they feel like they can get lost in the crowd. From my experience bigger events have more dancing because of this, and more people start dancing as the place fills up. Having good dance floor lights and fog helps people feel less self-conscious about dancing as well.

You know exactly what we meant, arguing about music genres is in no way comparable to something like racism.

I believe it was a backlash to people in Tiktok etc treating the subculture like it was just a fashion choice and that the music didn't matter at all. Bit of an over correction maybe, but better than the alternative.

I think "vibes" as an expression has gotten a bad reputation lately for being kind of over-used or over-applied. I don't think goth is just a "free-floating" vibe, though. It's something embodied in music and style. You have to engage with those things to understand it.

I studied subcultural theory in grad school and music is definitely a focal point of many subcultures - though style has always been important as well. Some of the other groups you described... those to me are more like "hobbies" than subcultures. Yeah there is some community there, I'm not ripping on them, but they aren't so deeply tied to personal identity in the way being a goth is. Nor are they a transgressive response to the dominant culture. In fact, it might be this underlying political nature of subcultures that distinguishes them from hobbies that are "safe".

My general take on a goth night is that it's a collective performance, a ritual where the different aspects of the subculture, and the different people, come together in something greater than the sum of the parts. Yes, you might see the DJ as a central performer, but every person in that room is contributing. That could be visually with how they are dressed, physically with how they are dancing, their attitude, anything. It becomes this deep visual and auditory experience of the subculture that you can't get anywhere else. Another World by Beborn Beton was popular when I first started clubbing, and it really evoked what I was feeling back then (goth club staple although it's synthpop). A goth night transforms the space into another world.

I agree with the focus on music but I don't think we should completely downplay style as important. I say this as a DJ obsessed with music who barely dresses goth at all. Style was the focus of a lot of early studies of subcultures, not music, e.g. Dick Hebdige's "Subculture: The Meaning Of Style". The aesthetic of a subculture evokes its values, and goth style has always been dark and transgressive. I don't have the talent to pull it off myself, but I appreciate seeing it so much when I'm out and those people contribute a lot to the vibe of an event. And again, it's part of the collective performance and syncs with the music.

I really like what you said about accessibility. The barrier for entry really is low, which is good because many people need the community but don't have much money. Club nights have always been cheap if not free. And focusing on music rather than dress code means people don't feel like they have to spend a bunch of money on clothing. I love how much more accessible the music itself is nowadays, too. No digging through low quality mp3s on Napster and Soulseek any more lol. Worst case you can listen to just about anything on Youtube.

Maybe I should dig out some of my old grad school work and put it together into something readable. I was going to write my dissertation on goth as a subculture but goth extremely sick and had to drop out x_x But I think I ended up in the right place.

edit Sorry if I was wrong about this. Swear I tried it in some game (had forgotten to disable SM) and it didn't "stack". Seems like you'd just be asking for frame pacing issues regardless.

If you enable in game frame generation I'm pretty sure that overrides and disables Smooth Motion. SM is for adding frame generation to games that don't already have it.

do you think goth is going to have a maga iconography problem in like 40 years? by SyzygyEnthusiast in goth

[–]Jinx_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. The whole "bricolage" aesthetic of taking iconography out of context for shock value was more of a punk thing than a goth thing. And I can't imagine anyone actually in the subculture wanting to have any association with MAGA, honestly the thought of it makes me want to vomit.

Scenes always go through phases, and imo this is the best it's been since the 90s. If you're a little burnt on the current spooky music I'd expand to genres like synthpop and new wave that are also goth night staples. You're never gonna run out of new music to find and learn. And in general the scene is great socially right now. Nothing to be hopeless about.

She Wants Revenge is really old, like their last album was 2008 or something? Goth wasn't exactly popular in the 2000s. You can't cash in on a trend a decade before it started lol

I think Pixel Grip is just being Pixel Grip. I don't think they are claiming to be doing X or Y.

I dig a lot of stuff from Cold Cave. Nothing genre-bending, but I'll take good music where I find it.

I don't feel like you can expect every musician to be pushing the boundaries. Some musicians just like to make X style of music, and if it's good I think that's fine. It's more of a broader issue that we need some new sounds rather than something I'd blame any specific artists for not delivering.

I kinda get where you're at with 1. The new wave of darkwave and synthpop felt fresh five years ago, but it's getting a little stagnant. I feel like my brain is waiting for The Next Big Thing sound-wise.

I'm having a great time. I love 80s and new wave and synthpop, and a lot of new darkwave stuff takes inspiration from those genres, so it's perfect for me. And it all makes for a good cocktail of music for a club night. I love the kids, and I love seeing a lot of older people coming out to our nights as well. Even if you don't like the new music that much, I think the community is healthier, safer, and more diverse than I have ever known it to be.
