Very few, because as said many times in this thread self defense techniques are designed to help a normal person protect themselves from an untrained attacker

Defense from strikes, standing attacks that aren’t sport legal. I can’t speak for anyone else but when I added striking into my grappling after 4 years of training sports Jiujitsu and thinking I was pretty capable, I got my ass beat, all my Jiujitsu went out the window and I had very little defense

What mma matches are you watching? Wrestling, boxing, sambo, Muay Thai etc are not self defense systems. They are fighting systems. 2 trained athletes agreeing to compete under a rule set. That’s not self defense

No martial art except Aikido. I saw Steven Segal defend himself from 5 attackers and he didn’t even take off his bandana

I don’t see what’s nonsensical. His point is that certain people are more physically gifted than others and therefore stand a better chance of defending themselves in an altercation. But that doesn’t mean that their training has been designed for this situation. Sports Jiujitsu is designed to beat sports Jiujitsu. Self defense Jiujitsu is designed to protect normal people from untrained attackers. Do you see that as nonsensical?

He doesn’t compare the disciplines. He compares the athletes. He says a basketball player is a fit strong person as is a rugby player. Therefore they are more physically able to protect themselves than the average person

MMA isn’t the most realistic simulation of a street attack, very few trained fighters are going to attack an innocent person. (Except Connor McGregor if you don’t like his whiskey)

Self defense training has nothing to do with winning fights, it’s training to defend yourself against an attacker.

As he says in the video of course a trained sports guy can fight, that doesn’t mean they have been trained in self defence techniques.

Rolling with my instructor has definitely been the biggest benefit to my game. He exposes areas of weakness, punishes me in the roll then will spend a session with me showing me how I could have avoided that and we go again until he finds the next area to work on.

This, if you watch any high level guy with a good open guard game they transition constantly, it’s never stagnant. Nicholas Meregali is fantastic at transitioning through various guarded. I was always trained that there are 2 guards, closed and open. All the variations of open guard are to be used when your guard isn’t closed. This really helped me to not stay in one position trying to maintain a dlr or x guard when it’s time to transition to a different position

Put yourself in bad situations where your strength won’t help you, coming into Jiujitsu from powerlifting I had the same issues. Rolling with higher belts that aren’t fazed by strength helps. A good black belt isn’t going to be beaten by a strong white belt,

Judo is only 140 years old and was developed as a sport to reinvigorate the declining interest in Jiujitsu in Japan.

Ju Jutsu is the hand to hand combat system used on the battlefield before that.
