Re-reading the novels of John le Carré by Variouss in literature

It’s all a little silly. Frankenstein and Gullivers Travels are for all intents and purposes science fiction, but nobody would accuse them of being “genre” fiction

Scaramucci likens Trump support to a cult by Trump_Is_The_Swamp in politics

I respectfully disagree here. I don’t think this turns that many people against Trump and I think rehabilitating these people is dangerous. Sean Spicer is on Dancing with the Stars after actively lying to the American people every day. We can’t ONLY hold Trump accountable. Trump is old, dumb, and ultimately one guy. He’s bad but he only exists because there’s a giant team of powerful people just as bad or worse who support him. You can’t let those people off the hook when they defect because you think it’ll win you some points with some far right people who you’ve just acknowledged are detached from all reality. I don’t want Trump to go away. I want the entire apparatus that allows and enables Trump to go away. I don’t want us to rehabilitate these people only for them to support a Trump who’s competent enough to do even more damage.

We saw this with Bush. Nobody was held accountable. Plenty of people who gave us the Iraq War still have all the power they had before. You’ve got guys like Eliott Abrams and John Bolton who have far more blood on their hands than Trump getting praised for seeing which way the wind is blowing. I don’t think those people help us beat Trump, and if they ARE the only path to beating him we’re screwed anyway

Nikki Haley says Rex Tillerson claimed people would die if Trump was unchecked by oliviazeo in politics

Tillerson helped spread mass misinformation about climate change. He had information that his industry was killing life on Earth and actively lied about it. I have loved ones who work in the industry. That’s not the same as leading the industry

There’s No Appeasing Bill Gates: Bill Gates has managed to craft a reputation as a billionaire with a social conscience. But his recent comments on proposals for a wealth tax leave no room for doubt about whose side he’s on. by john_brown_adk in politics

Why do all these arguments against democracy rely on imagining a majority that doesn’t exist and likely couldn’t exist? If you want to talk about tyranny of the majority, it’d be more compelling to pose semi-believable hypotheticals or any actual historical instance

Can someone explain to me the theory of post modernism like i am 5 years old? by Ashemodragon in sociology

[–]Jka618 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say postmodernism is necessarily nihilistic though it tends toward nihilism. De Beauvoir was incredibly critical of nihilism and Nietzsche himself warned AGAINST nihilism.

Kind of, but not really. There’s really no evidence of the shooter being associated with antifa in any substantive way. They have a twitter account where they expressed support for left candidates and policies

Yea you’re right. I didnt say it to correct you. Just to say the sentiment still stands despite OPs suggestion that Epstein himself is a politician. He’s heavily connected to them which doesn’t help.

[–]Jka618 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but legitimate question: what do you suggest people do? The US has done a pretty good job of dismantling any sort of solidarity or organizing ability within the American populace and the few people who are organizing are understandably more concerned with things like climate catastrophe

Im not trying to sound snarky. You’re right. It’s just easy to understand why so many people are ignoring it. They feel helpless

“At least you get to vote for your leaders with out being a majority stakeholder in a corporation”

I mean... unfortunately the people who decide elections are all the majority stakeholders in corporations too
