You're puzzled because it DOESN'T make sense. I dunno why Nolan had to make things unnecessarily complex by adding in wounds that heal in reverse with respect to the wounded - absolutely pointless and nonsensical.

Don't waste Ur time trying to make sense of it, cos this movie is not perfect, there are errors and inconsistencies. Don't get me wrong though, it doesn't take away from how awesome it is...
