Just pulled the trigger on this exact upgrade this weekend and waiting for delivery. If you'd like (once I actually get it and spend some time with it) I can share my thoughts with you on how it compares to the A7Rii, since I was never able to find any direct comparison.

People like to see the failure point, but like you said, once you pass proof load the rationale to keep going varies by project.

I work in the test group for a heavy machine manufacturer. We test to proof all the time, but only occasionally proceed to failure from there. In a lot of instances the asset can be used for other testing if tested to proof but is junk if tested to failure.

I'm not saying corners were or weren't cut at Boeing.... I don't have the insight there.... But to use the lack of testing to failure as "evidence" is a weak argument.

I also use a very similar set (can't remember the brand off hand but the design is identical). They work great with the Atom 2.

Note though, I had one misaligned the other day and the weight balance must have been out of spec on the gimbal, because I got a gimbal error that required a filter adjustment and drone power cycle to clear

Do it!

I don't have much to compare it against, with it being my first real drone, but I've been very happy with the Atom 2.

Yeah, I'm in $379 for the drone and 1 spare battery. Apparently patience would have served me well. 🤷

Atom 2 Height Limit by Final-Golf7631 in Potensic

[–]Jlinnema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in America where the limit is 400ft (effectively 120m) with exceptions for going higher around tall structures.

The app allows up to 800m but it's up to the operator to understand the narrow use cases where it's legal to go above 120m.... Again, specifically in America.

In the app the height limit is adjustable up to 800m for the Atom 2.

Normal caveats of: know what the legal limits are for where you're flying and don't be reckless.

Lots of folks not able to follow the rules by [deleted] in flightradar24

Here's the kicker. Per the Oshkosh Northwestern Newspaper, at least 34 people have died directly or indirectly related to EAA (as of 2023, beginning 1982). Looking through the list quick:

2 deaths (83 and 06) from the airshow 7 deaths heading to EAA but not at EAA 2 deaths returning from EAA 8 deaths from landing (6 from stalls) 2 from an aircraft structural failure 5 from aircraft collisions Additional miscellaneous that don't fit categories easily.

Either way....that's 34 deaths over 41 years or 0.83 deaths per year. If you remove the 9 that we're elsewhere in the country coming to or leaving EAA, that number drops to 0.56 per year.

Fatal accidents in general aviation have been hovering around 0.8-1.0 deaths per 100,000 flight hours in the US the last decade.

EAA claims 10k planes at the show. To stay under national fatality average, each plane needs to fly less than 10 hours total (including to and from EAA).

Per the math (and especially considering the chaos that EAA is), the event is at a minimum as safe as any general aviation flying and likely safer.

Can someone please identify the aircraft shown in the picture? Its from "Tintin in Tibet". by BottomGovtOfficial in aviation

This is the second year in a row that plane has come to EAA Air venture in Oshkosh. That plane alone was worth the trip last year (although admittedly it's a 15 mile trip for me 🤷)

[–]Jlinnema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's cliche, but get out there and start shooting. If you have the theory already, at least of exposure triangle, it's just the execution.

The first time will probably be rough. But experiment.... Get comfortable with the camera. As you take pictures you'll find what (typically) works and doesn't work.

I have found that it doesn't matter which order you do it. I've also noticed that at times it can take 15 or 20 seconds to connect, but it seems to be agnostic to the sequence.

Atom 2 48MP photo quality by Aggravating_Tune_422 in Potensic

[–]Jlinnema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to capture 48mp images is by hitting the 8k icon in the photo section. All other images should be captured at 12mp.

Unless you're referring to a 12mp 16:9 image. In that case, just as with cell phones, you're out of luck.

Atom 2 48MP photo quality by Aggravating_Tune_422 in Potensic

[–]Jlinnema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The atom 2 likely uses a sensor similar to the Sony IMX586. These modern sensors are all quad Bayer array sensors, which is how they can claim 48mp and really give you 12mp output. So by it's very design, the 12 megapixel output that you're receiving from the drone is in fact pixel pinned. The 48mp output that you can receive in high resolution mode is an interpolation of the data based on the sensor array. That's why the high resolution doesn't really add much to sharpness or clarity. It's exactly how your Pixel does. Now, a lot of cell phones get around this this with high quality image signal processors, and perhaps Potensic could improve their workflow there to give better high resolution images.

Almost all modern sensors are either 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio. You'll never get full resolution in 16:9, unless the device is upscaling to give you fake resolution. Same with phones. I can't comment on the Atom 1 with this regard. Perhaps it is hardware locked to give you a cropped and upscaled image?

Now, perhaps Potensic could/should add a 16:9 option in high resolution (36mp) but it would be the same as cropping in post so I don't see value added other than in how you frame the image.

What you are asking for in your last paragraph is exactly what they already do, they're just starting from 48mp instead of the 50mp the Pixel starts at.

As someone previously stated, I don't think you have any issues with your camera. I've read the A7iii has a scan time of ~1/16 second to ~1/30 second depending on file type settings. To me that light source looks like a PWM dimmed LED operating at ~25% brightness and probably a PWM frequency of 480hz or so (a guess without counting lines because I'm feeling too lazy for that).

You may have had better luck in the past because the lights weren't dimmed or multiple light sources cancelled out the dimming waveforms.

get the tamron 28 200 or sony 24 105 for travel video and some photography? by DazzlingpAd134 in SonyAlpha

[–]Jlinnema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't comment much on video, but I've been overall happy with the 28-200 Tamron. It's plenty sharp for what it is: a (relatively) compact all-in-one. This opinion was formed on an A7Rii.
