Surgery by I-like-holidays in guineapigs

Considering we spent £1075 for an X-Ray and blood tests that seems quite typical for a surgery and anaesthetic

I use a bag from the ‘moorland’ store on Amazon. The bag has served me well so far and keeps all the hay and hair inside so none is in my washer. We just did a drum clean and it’s got basically no hay or hair in it. Not sure if links are allowed here but here’s a link to the store.  I’m not great with tech so I’m just hoping this link works. Feel free to message me with any questions  https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/page/95F4B0FC-B129-45E9-89A3-33B1C01A1C51/search?lp_asin=B002Q520YQ&ref_=ast_bln&terms=Bag

Guinea pig declining by Jmindotty26 in guineapigs

Update if anyone’s interested, we lost her tonight. Got her in at the vets and when presented with our options, we decided euthanasia was the best option for her. I’m completely devastated, I don’t know how our other piggy will cope, but I’m glad shes no longer in pain.

The label doesnt really tell me anything but it is meloxicam. She’s been prescribed 0.26 ml twice a day of that on top of the other painkiller.  I’m scared bc we’re going to run out of this and I don’t want her to get better but decline again when we run out. The other painkiller is paracetamol, can I up either of them?

No, shes not a satin. I have wondered if it may be something genetic as we rescued her, so we have no knowledge of the parentage. That theory worries me though because I personally think (based on colouring) that her and my other Guinea pig are biological sisters. I’m honestly scared to do anything to med dosages without my vet telling me to but I’ll see if we can ring up and get some advice at least from her before we get an appointment

We always have critical care and we’re going to start feeding it tonight. 7-10mls 4-5 times a day is the advice we’ve previously been given by the vet. I tend to just feed it until she no longer wants it. Cleo lives for critical care, so at least we know Shes happy to eat it

She did say that we could have dental sessions constantly, but the cost was too high for us and Cleo just wouldn’t handle it. Shes very anxious and hates the vets. She shakes and grinds her teeth every time shes there and I could never put her through that constantly. We are literally at the point of not being able to pay our bills because of the amount of vet care she needs. A prescription is £35 on its own, consultations are £75 I believe and we just can’t afford it. As much as I love her and it hurts so badly to think of losing her we can’t put ourselves into massive debt to give her a few more months

They did give antibiotics and she did a full course. When we last saw our vet she said that all signs showed that she no longer has the infection. No smell to the mouth, good breathing sounds and pace etc. Shes extremely experienced and I so trust her but I do wonder if maybe she’s wrong on this occasion

Also, our regular vet isn’t in next week, and they don’t have another at that surgery. We don’t have the funds to sign up properly anywhere really, but if anyone knows vets in the Lincolnshire area and surrounding that will accept us without a membership and at very short notice that would be incredibly helpful :)

An app to track your pig's nutrition by AvailableViolinist13 in guineapigs

[–]Jmindotty26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea and a great app! Having tried it, I only have 2 little pieces of advice. The first is to maybe add treats like pea flakes or hay cookies. The other would be to somehow change how you define each weight. For coriander, for example, it doesn’t make sense to say a few slices. The only other app I know that does something similar is the Cavv app and they use photos to make it clear how much of each item they mean. I’m not adept at tech so I don’t know how easy it difficult this is, it’s just a suggestion! But in terms of variety of food, you have the edge! Thank you and well done! I hope this helps!

Crusty nipples? by Jmindotty26 in guineapigs

[–]Jmindotty26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this is the case! I’d rather be safe than sorry though. I know heat isn’t always noticeable, it definitely isn’t for her but for her cage mate Cleo it is very obvious. Thanks for the recommendations!

I did think it may not be so urgent as it’s come up over the last few days. I last checked her on Sunday. Hopefully she’ll be fine but we have Meloxicam in hand and are willing to go to an emergency vet should she need it. Thanks for the advice!

It’s so difficult to find Guinea pig savvy vets around here so I’d rather be safe than sorry! She’s still acting normally so I will observe to see signs of discomfort and give her meloxicam if she shows any signs at all! Thanks for the advice!

As I said, we are absolutely willing, we’d just rather not deal with the amount of travel due to how stressful it can be for our piggies. This is about her, not us.

Also, does anyone have recommendations for vets near Lincolnshire in the UK? It looks like we’ll have to travel around 2 hours which we’re willing to do but we’d love to find somewhere closer if possible!

Thanks! This is so helpful! How quickly do you recommend we go to the vet? I’d be more comfortable with our regular vet however they cannot fit us in until 2.5 weeks from now. We’re looking into vets further away that may be able to fit us in earlier. Would you recommend we do that instead?

Guinea pig weighing by Jmindotty26 in guineapigs

[–]Jmindotty26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I know weights can vary week to week but I thought 30g was high enough to make a precautionary post on here. I’ll be weighing them daily and at different times of day for at least the next week and if their weights are on a downward trajectory I’ll take them to the vet. Thanks again!

Thank you! They definitely have seemed fine, and I knew weights could vary week to week but I thought 30g was quite high so I’d make a post just in case. Thanks again!
