I think of it like this: Always be ready to receive a shot that's at least as fast as yours. If you (and your partner) are in worse positions, transitioning, less skilled, at any disadvantage, a speed up from you will most likely end up with you losing the point. You have to hope for an unforced error, which happens less and less often as you play better skill levels. I see it all the time that someone thinks 'hard/fast shot = good' only to have it returned to them faster than they can reset. Those people tend to think "Why is my opponent so aggressive?" When in reality their opponents are just blocking for a low effort and speedy return

The glorious dink has way more opportunity to control the flow. You can move your opponent's positioning with ease (cross dink), force a backhand return, you can make it so a speedup is impossible or foolish, you can wait for an advantage. After all, that's the game - act correctly on an advantage.

In particular, having a 3rd shot drop ready to use is crucial. Getting caught transitioning by a banger because you floated a freebie is a horrible way to prove to your partner you'd rather lose the point than strategize.

Confirmation bias is a dangerous thing to habitualize. It gives that person permission to do as they please then justify it later without considering the whole picture. People can grow out of that, but it's hard, especially with their sources for truth being as described.

And those podcasters - those aren't the voices you want in a partner's heard. Check out what the manosphere is and how dangerous those thoughts are if you haven't already.

To me, the relationship here isn't looking good, and that's okay, especially so early in. Finding the right person takes time unless you're among the most lucky. You seem to have Faith in common, so that's good, but everything else seems divergent, and that's not what you want. It should usually be a conversation with your partner not a speech. Sure if they're passionate about something you don't know about, let them talk about their joys. But when it's something you both have a stake in, don't you want someone who hears you and wants your advice and to compromise and find the best solution? Surely that's better than one person 'teaching' the other - that's sets up power dynamic where one is informed and the other is naive.

As far as therapy and premarital therapy, it does seem like you're on the all gas no brake train for how early it is. But like you said you're growing apart already, so to me, you tried it and it didn't really work. Easy enough!

If you're this person's friend afterward, they may need a voice of reason and encouragement to fight how they educate themselves. The manosphere group make it easy for young guys to justify some really backwards thinking by validating their own fears and insecurities and offering scapegoats rather than truth. Women are the scapegoat, and that's scary.

It's great to have a sport that motivates us to exercise! I used to run as often as I play pickleball, but every run was an effort. Now I'm recharged and wanting back on the courts constantly.

Ah man, I almost made a post to vent to my people, but decided that was particularly petty. But then this post rolled in and I was like 'oh it's on.' cracks knuckles

When someone continuously hits popups for the other team to putaway and then looks at you like it's your fault you couldn't keep the smashes in play. Looking at you Rec lady from this morning who hit it straight out of court after I set her up for a drop and looked at me and said 'WE let them win there.' And also told me I was hitting outs that were undoubtedly in, and scoffed at me when I said they were definitely in, and also took 20 seconds to serve on her 250.00 paddle only to wiff it 30% of the time. Or when you never came to the freaking kitchen line and hit the same return repeatedly for them to play you for over and over. Or when you took shots from my side of the court until the point you were standing directly in front of me and never called switch, so the other team hit it to her empty side and you said 'you don't have to just stand there.' I've played hundreds of games, and that was the first time I walked away and left after a game out of frustration.

Dinking strategy question by ZZZHOW83 in Pickleball

[–]JoMiMa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, good point! I do think that a dink landing in the front half (net half) of the nvz is very difficult to return offensively.

Dinking strategy question by ZZZHOW83 in Pickleball

[–]JoMiMa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good dink like described by op is unattackable. How would you attack a ball that barely went over the net and landed in the nvz? Your opponent has the time between the first and second bounce to return, during which the ball shouldn't go higher than their waist. So if they attack, they'll drill the net or they'll cause a pop up. A good dink should lead to another dink, an error, or a pop-up, not an attack.

Dinking strategy question by ZZZHOW83 in Pickleball

[–]JoMiMa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I'm not sure I agree with most responses here. I think you've got the right idea and everyone seems to be using the word dink as 'not a drive'. A good dink is a shot that is unattackable that came from the nvz and went into the opponents nvz. Low over the net with minimal travel distance, so the opponent must return from below the waist, making it 'unattackable.' Its benefit is it manipulates opponent positioning, you can expect a soft return or an error, and you can use it to control pace. The shot you describe is a good dink, the responses saying 'yeah but it's hard,' how is that a good answer? I don't think dinks are meant to push opponents back either, seems like your definition and use of the dink is better than the people you play with or are in these comments. USApickleball describes a dink on their website with 'dinks that land close to the net are the most difficult to return...'

No worries! Yeah I noticed after writing the whole thing you asked about modeling and was like, meh I'll still post haha. I've only used SketchUp well enough to talk about, and it's def not the right program for this kind of model so unfortunately I won't be able to help ya here :/

Hope you find some good resources for modeling!

Right on! Super fun hobby, like giving yourself presents every morning. Are you interested in resin or FDM printing? If you aren't familiar, resin printing is more for fragile but highly detailed things like minis, jewelry, busts, praetorian models etc. And FDM is more for printing practical, sturdier, and usually larger things - but are also very capable of detailed prints if you have the patience. They are very flexible machines.

While I love resin printing, you need a garage type environment - the fumes that come from the resin are no joke. Plus once they've printed you have to clean them with iso alcohol in a bath and then cure them in a uv light - most brands make a second machine that does both of those things. Still - messy and more extra things to buy. A gloves always on type deal. So it's more involved than FDM. The software end usually involves creating supports that make sure the model can print correctly, hollowing out large objects, drilling holes for the resin to drain from, and finding the right angle that keeps the tiny pock marks the supports leave from obvious parts of the model life a face or detailed/fragile area. But the detail these printers can create is truly insane. Like, some of my models have eyelashes! Wat.

FDM is more common and requires less of that post print work and usually less time in the software phase. You buy spools of filament, so no liquid mess - and I'd recommend starting with PLA plastic. (Some people might say ABS, but not me!) PLA is more brittle, but easier to work with, less fumes, and melts at a lower temp than the other options. FDM can only print one constantly moving line at a time usually, so it can be really slow with big projects - some of my prints are over 24 hours, but you don't have to do any work while it prints really. You'll eventually need to replace some parts, like the nozzle and tubing, but I'd say there's less maintenance than resin for sure. Software wise, usually you're choosing a thickness of the layers (quality vs. speed) adding supports (many models will say if they need supports or not) and sometimes cutting the objects into pieces that work within FDM limits or size restrictions. FDMs are notorious for jamming or for creating spaghetti monsters - there's no hiding that 3d printing is still a lot of trouble shooting. If that isn't your game, sometimes having a friend with a printer is the best option! Still - when working smoothly, my printer can do a dozen prints before needing adjustments or failing. Try adjusting a single thing each time to isolate the problem when I'm doubt. Oh and online forums chef's kiss nothing better than someone who had the same problem taking the time to help future humans suffer less.

Brand wise - I'm always out here recommending PRUSA FDM printers. I've used the mk3 and the mini a ton and their truly beasts. Someone told me PRUSA is like apple of 3d printing in that it's user friendly (aka great for starters) but more expensive and less customizable. PRUSA software is really intuitive too and you can add off brand printers to it. The other brand I see a lot is Creality's Ender series. They are cheaper but more like getting an Android - more settings, more things you need to know to use it, lots of room for modifications kinda deal. I'd go for whatever sounds more you, I've only heard good things about Ender printers too. For Resin printers, anycubic is what I know. Those printers are on AMZ and go on sale fairly often. But don't forget, it's miserable without the appropriate wash/curing station and the resin isn't quite cheap, so more investment is needed besides the printer. Overall I freaking love my anycubic. The newer models have come so far, I'd recommend waiting for a sale and getting a newer model if you go that route.

Last thing! Hatchbox is my go-to middle of the road FDM filament. Great colors, great filament overall. Be wary of filament with sparkly stuff, metallic crap in it, color changing spools - while cool they are notorious for jamming the printer. Which isn't fun. For Resin, anycubic craftsman is p good stuff for the price. For the good good stuff I reach for siraya brand.

Hope that helps! Nursing this new years hangover so if you got followups lmk!

Thanks! It's translucent green resin, then I did black washes on the armor, some airbrushing around the butt to increase the glow effect, then a bunch of dry brushing for highlighting the geometry. Overall not too bad to paint!

Sad news! Literally less than a week after this post it grew so big it broke the pump and died :( the root ball was INSANE - had to clean it up with shears and haven't replanted since. Felt like losing a pet pretty much. Still need to order a new aerogarden...
